Aécio Neves da Cunha (
pron. IPA: ; born
March 10,
1960) is a
Brazilian politician. He is the grandson of former president
Tancredo Neves. In
1987, Neves was elected to the
Federal Chamber of Deputies (House of Representatives) from his home state of
Minas Gerais and served until
2002. He was president of the Chamber of Deputies (
Speaker of the House) in
2001.
Aécio Neves is the current
governor of Minas Gerais, having been elected in 2002 with more than 60% of the popular vote. He is a prominent figure and was a potential presidential candidate in the
PSDB (Brazilian Social Democratic Party), the main opposition to the current government in Brazil.
However, Aécio Neves has frequently stated his belief that a presidential candidate should be at least 50 years old. He will turn 50 in
2010, when everything indicates he will try to become his party's presidential candidate.
