Abeona
This article is about the Roman goddess. For the asteroid, see 145 Adeona. In
Roman mythology,
Abeona was a goddess who protected children the first time they left their parents' home, safeguarding their first steps alone. She is related to
Adeona, a goddess who guided children back to their parents' home. Note that
ab was a
Latin prefix meaning "from", and
ad was one meaning "to".
These two deities were among the
di indigetes ("indigenous gods") of Rome, abstract deities and concepts that predated the many later
syncretisms of various cultures' mythologies.
