Achterhoek

The region lies between the IJssel, Oude IJssel, German border and the province Overijssel. It is a very rural area, with lots of free space, forests and farms. Specially the area around the town of Winterswijk is regarded as very beautiful. A famous beer was originated in this region: Grolsch beer was first brewed in Groenlo in 1615.

The most important towns in the Achterhoek are: Doetinchem, Winterswijk, Doesburg, Zutphen and Borculo.Doesburg and Zutphen are old hanseatic cities. Both have very well preserved centres with historical buildings. The local language is not Dutch, but Low Saxon.
