Adwell

Adwell Church

Adwell is a parish in the English county of Oxfordshire. It is known as Advelle in the Domesday Book. The parish covers 434 acres with a popuation of 68. The village itself has 9 homes.

Adwell Cop is an archaelogical site between Adwell and Tetsworth. One theory suggested that the Danes built fortifications there when they burnt Oxford in 1010. When the nearby M40 was constructed, excavations were made at the site, revealing three graves, one of which was a child. A bronze buckle was found on the site, dating to the 7th century. St Marys Church Adwell, a building of flint and stone in mixed styles, was restored very thoroughly in 1865. Adwell House is the seat of the Reynardson family.
