Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle was a game for the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Genesis. It was the second-to-last last video game using the Alex Kidd character as a Sega mascot before Sonic the Hedgehog. It was also the only 16-bit Alex Kidd game.

The game consists of Alex Kidd searching for his father. Unlike most games in the series, this game followed closely the first game (Alex Kidd in Miracle World) formula, with punches used to destroy enemies (rather than the traditional jump on head). The game is also noted for the inclusion of Rock, Paper, Scissors, which was used against bosses and to get secret items in the game.

Intro

Adapted from the box.

BASH! BIFF! POW! Alex Kidd is punching, kicking, and leaping through paperock planet , trying to save his dad! He's having a tough time, what with scorpions, pufferfish, monkeys and mummies all blocking his way.

THUD! SPLAT! BOOM! Alex knocks down a rock pile and grabs the gold. Every time he gets gold, he's got a better chance to win! Then he bounces high in the sky and dives deep under the ocean to snare more!

ROCK! PAPER! SCISSORS! Alex gets dragged into a frantic game of Janken (Rock, Paper, Scissors). He's got to get the right sign to beat his bully opponent and escape with all his family.

UP! UP! AND AWAY! Alex speeds in his Pedicopter, right up to the Enchanted Castle! Now he can save his dad by tricking Ashra, the ruler of Paperock. But what's the winning sign? Guess Quick

Gameplay

In this game, Alex must run through 11 levels this. Controls include the regular platformer motion with a and c to jumpkick and b to punch.

Editing

In the Japanese version of the game, when Alex Kidd or his opponent loses a Rock Paper Scissors match, the loser loses his or her clothes.

In the Western versions, a weight drops from the top of the screen onto the loser.

Levels

The following is a list of levels and their description as taken from the Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle instruction manual. Other stuff may be added.

LEVEL 1- Rookie Town

Demolish planes and cars with punches and kicks. Grab lots of Gold so you can buy winning items. Look for the underground passage.

This level is by far the easiest, and can pretty much be considered a tutorial level. Most of the better items are found here.

LEVEL 2- The Prairie

Watch out for prairie dogs, dirt beetles, and crazy condors. When hedgehogs curl into balls, they're indestructible. Look for underground level.

We finally see some sort of challenge. The forementioned hedgehog is in no way relating to the later Sonic the Hedgehog series.

LEVEL 3- The Splashy Sea

Pufferfish are full of hot air. The sunfish can take a lot of wallops before giving up. Demolish the octopus a tentacle at a time, but don't get inked.

This is a very good level to use Alex's pedicopter in (a helicopter he pedals with his feet). You can get through the entire level without going into the water. If you are strapped for cash, kill the big fish, as they are worth 100 coins. The pots under the octopuses are actually doors to Janken matches and items.

LEVEL 4- Scorpion Desert

The scorpion sting is deadly! And lions try to snag you from their traps.

This is another good level to use the pedicopter, as you will have to fight virtually no enemies.

LEVEL 5- Pyramid

Mummies and scorpions will give you the creeps!

Just as the name implies, you fight this round in a giant pyramid. This is the first round with a boss that you must defeat in a Janken match.

LEVEL 6- Hiho Forest

Blaze a path through the trees. Duck or destroy the Bee Brutes and Manic Monkeys. The Woodcutter chops up everything he sees, including you!

Bee Brutes? Manic Monkeys?!?! Who came up with these names anyway? The physics in this level are a little off. When you punch a tree, it should stay up if it isn't hollow, in which case it should fall. in this level, only half the trees are tangeable, and when you punch them, only a section of the tree gets punched out, leaving the rest of the tree suspended in midair. The boss is a bear dude in a t-shirt.

LEVEL 7- Tropics Town

A sister to Rookietown

This level has the same backdrop as Rookietown, but is much tougher. It also does not feature a boss unlike the previous two levels.

LEVEL 8- Rocky Mountain #1

Don't lose your footing or you're a goner. Take a ride on the suspension bridges.

A decent level with the most annoying little wizards you can possibly imagine. These guys come literally out of nowhere and kill you with the slightest touch.

LEVEL 9- Rocky Mountain #2

Climb, climb, climb! The old wizard and rolling stones will test your skills.

This is where things get really tough. This level, instead of being a side scroller, is an up scroller, which proves to be somewhat difficult. You are forced to buy overpriced pedicopters here to prepare for....

LEVEL 10- In the Sky

Use the Pedicopter for this airy race. Blast the blimp.

This level can be very annoying if you don't have enough copters. If you die with no copters, you are sent back to RM#2.

LEVEL 11- Sky Castle

Punch the levers to control the suspended ceilings. Don't fall on the spears. Keep a lookout for mice, robots and chameleons, they're all mean. The fire ghost is indestructible. Alex may find his Dad, King Thor, in the Sky Castle. He may also get a surprise.

Never have gotten the surprise. The whole level works in a room system, not scrolling, but pausing and moving to different rooms and levels, which can be irritating. This level is by far the hardest, and is full of secrets. Good Luck
