Alex Stepney

Alex Stepney (born September 18, 1942 in Mitcham, Surrey) was an English football player. After having trials with Fulham, he joined Tooting and Mitcham in 1958 at the age of 16. He was signed by Millwall on amateur forms as a 19-year-old, in March 1963. It did not take The Lions long to realise Stepney's ability and in May of the same year he signed as a professional. Three years later he was signed by Tommy Docherty for Chelsea but left for Manchester United for £55,000 in 1966 three months later, a record at the time for a goalkeeper. He made his first appearance for the club in 1966 against Manchester City. He went on to help the club win the League Championship in 1967 and the 1968 European Cup. In 1974, he led the team for a time in goals scored with 2. He was penalty taker for the club that season. He still holds the club record for goals scored by a keeper. He left the club to play with the Dallas Tornado in the North American Soccer League in 1978. He made 535 appearances for United and had 175 clean sheets, he also made one appearance for England.
