Anand Satyanand with Dame Silvia Cartwright

Judge Anand "Satch" Satyanand, PCNZM (born 22 July 1944 in Auckland) is a New Zealand lawyer, judge and ombudsman.

He will replace Dame Silvia Cartwright as the Governor-General of New Zealand when he is sworn in on Wednesday 23 August.

He will be the first New Zealand Governor-General of Asian descent and the first not holding a Knighthood or Dameship. Recent changes have meant that upon assuming the role of Governor-General he will receive the title The Honourable for life [1].

He was born and raised in Auckland to an Indo-Fijian family, attending the University of Auckland where he received a Bachelor of Laws in 1970. He worked as a lawyer for the next 12 years, including a time at the Crown Solicitors Office.

In 1982, he was appointed a district court judge. Then in 1995, he was appointed an ombudsman and served two five-year terms.

He is married with three adult children.
