Anthoupoli
Anthoupoli is a
suburb south of
Nicosia, capital city of the
Republic of Cyprus. Anthoupoli is a rather new area which was created after the
Turkish Invasion of 1974 to house refugees. Anthoupoli is one of the most dangerous areas of Cyprus to live in. Drug use and
prostitution are common practices and the police force is generally considered corrupt and ineffective. On
21 August,
2005, large amounts of
heroin and
cocaine were found in the area's primary school. This has resulted in significant public outcry.
The famous
Cyprus drug baron Andreas "Grivas" Stylianou was born here. He has been wanted by the police for over 20 years, and although it is known that he dwells in Anthoupoli, the police remain unwilling or unable to find him. Grivas, is also the leader of an extreme nationalist gang, which is outlawed and spreads terror in Athoupoli.
