Area code 403
Area code 403 is a telephone
area code in the
Canadian province of
Alberta, encompassing the southern half of the province.
Prior to
1997, the 403 area code encompassed the whole province of Alberta, the
Yukon and the western half of the
Northwest Territories. The territories were given their own separate area code,
867, in 1997. In
1999, the northern half of Alberta was split into the new area code
780.
Communities served by the 403 area code include
Calgary,
Medicine Hat,
Lethbridge,
Red Deer and
Banff.
As of April 2006, the projected
exhaust date for Area Code 403 is March, 2011. For more information see the
Canadian Numbering Administrator Website. A new area code will be assigned 12-18 months prior to the exhaust date and the 403 area code will be overlayed with the existing area code or split with Calgary likely retaining the existing 403 area code.
