Bone (disambiguation)

The word bone(s) has many meanings:

Human Bones

*Bone is a hard dense tissue found in the skeleton of vertebrates animals. It is a composite material consisting largely of calcium phosphate and collagen. Bones are classified as connective tissue, one of four primary tissue types in the body. The body system comprised of bones is called the skeletal system or human skeleton. In a developing fetus, the initial fetal skeleton is comprised of hyaline cartilage and is transformed into osseus (bone) tissue throuugh the process of ossification. There are three major bone cells: (1) osteoblast, (bone building) (2) osteocytes, (mature cells]] and (3) osteoclast, (bone dissolving) . Collagen forms a matrix in compact bone, an osteon, which is filled with minerals to form a tough, weight bearing, exterior section of the structure. The inner sections include cancellous bone, or spongey, where red bone marrow is formed. An the innermost feature of long bones is a medullary cavity that contains adipose tissue called yellow bone marrow. There are five major classifications of bones in the human body are: (1) Long bones (humerus) , (2) Short bones (carpus), or carples, (3) Flat bones (ribs), (4) Irregular bones (vertabrae), and (5) Sesamoid bones (patella).

Injuries to bones are called bone fractures and require special medical attention.

Musculoskeletal interaction

Bones serve as a point of attachmet for muscles (see muscular system) in the body. The study of bones, ligaments, joints, muscles and tendons is kinesiology or, the study of movement. Together, the two systems form a system of fulcrums and levers for movement. Bones also form joints, or articulations for better movement.

The creation of movement in the body is defined as work in its simplest terms. Specialized muscles, sleletal muscles are voluntary and attach to bone to create movement and work. Skeletal muscle contractions can be either isometric, muscle contraction with no joint movement, or isotropic, muscle contraction with accompanied joint movement. Also, the movement of specialized joints, diarthrosis, create highly specialized movements, or articulations. For example, when the arm is moved to create a "bulging bicept", that movement is called flexion, and the opposite action of straightening is called extension. (See: Anatomical terms of motion)
