Bowling for Soup
Bowling for Soup is a
pop-punk band based in
Denton, Texas (but originally from
Wichita Falls, Texas) formed in
1994; best known for their
singles "
Girl All The Bad Guys Want" in
2002, (a
2003 Grammy Award nominee) and "
1985" in
2004, a major commercial hit.
The band's name is derived from
comedian Steve Martin's "Bowling for Shit" routine from his
1978 comedy album,
Wild and Crazy Guy, itself a reference to
Bowling for Dollars.
The band gained much notoriety when "Girl All The Bad Guys Want", off the
album Drunk Enough to Dance, was nominated for the
Grammy for "Best Pop Performance by a Group or Duo". Though the band did not take home the award, the nomination served as a launching point for the success of
2004's
A Hangover You Don't Deserve. Sales of that album were driven in large part by the
radio airplay of the single "1985", a song written by the band
SR-71. The version recorded by
SR-71 features Jaret on backing vocals, and the version recorded by Bowling For Soup features
Mitch Allan Lead Singer of
SR-71.
The band members are lead guitar/vocals
Jaret Reddick, guitar/vocals
Chris Burney, bassist/vocals
Erik Chandler, and drummer
Gary Wiseman.
Lance Morril was the original drummer.
Bowling for Soup Goes to the Movies, a compilation album of cover songs and contributions to movie soundtracks, came out in
2005.
Their new album, titled
The Great Burrito Extortion Case, is planned for release in late
2006/early
2007.
