Count of Champagne
The
Counts of Champagne ruled the region of
Champagne, France from
950 to
1316. Champagne evolved from the county of Troyes in the late eleventh century and
Hugues of Champagne was the first to officially use the title "
Count of Champagne".
When Louis became
King of France in
1314, upon the death of his father
Philip IV, Champagne became part of the Crown's territories. The titular counts of Champagne also inherited the post of
seneschal of France.

Dukes of Champagne
In
Merovingian and
Carolingian times, several
Dukes of Champagne (or
Campania) are known. The Duchy appears to have been created by joining together the
civitates of
Rheims,
Châlons-sur-Marne,
Laon and
Troyes. Early named Dukes may include Lupus and Vintronus. Two
Pippinids,
Drogo son of
Pippin of Herstal, and Drogo's son
Arnulf, held the Duchy in the years around 700.
