Counts of Toulouse

After the Visigothic Kings of Aquitaine (409508), the Merovingian were kings and dukes in Aquitaine and dukes of Toulouse.

The Carolingians appointed counts of Toulouse, 778848:
* Torson, designated Count of Toulouse by Charlemagne, 778, regent for King Louis I of Aquitaine; deposed 790
* Saint William of Gellone, second count of Toulouse 790811 (d.812 or 814)
* Raymond Raphinel, designated by Charlemagne (811)
* Berengar the Wise (Bérenger le Sage), duke of Toulouse, 814-835; son of Unroch II, margrave of Friuli
* Garin, duke of Toulouse, designated by Louis I (835)
* Pepin I, king of Aquitaine, died 849

The hereditary Counts of Toulouse ruled the city of Toulouse and its surrounding county from the late 9th century until 1270. The counts and other family members were also at various times counts of Quercy, Rouergue, Albi, and Nîmes, and margraves of Gothia and Provence. Also, Raymond IV founded the Crusader state of Tripoli, and his descendants were counts there.
* Bernat of Septimania, assassinated in 844
* Freddon (d. 852)
* Raymond I (852862)
* Bernard (862872)
* Eudes (872919)
* Raymond II (919924)
* Raymond III Pons (924–c.950)
* Raymond IV (c. 950961)
* Hugh (961972)
* Raymond (972978) [recent research suggests adding this previously unknown count to solve the problem of the otherwise extraordinary lifespan of William Tallifer; this would of course necessitate renumbering the succeeding Raymond's, though this is not done here.]
* William III Tallifer (d. 1037)
* Pons (1037 – c. 1061)
* William IV (10611094)
* Raymond IV (10941095)
* Bertrand (10951112)
* Alphonse-Jordan (11121148)
* Raymond V (11481194)
* Raymond VI (11941222)
* Raymond VII (12221249)
* Joan of Toulouse and Alphonse of Poitiers (12491271)

At that point Toulouse passed to the Crown of France, by the terms of the Treaty of Languedoc.
