Court is an English word known since 1175, from Old French curt, from Latin cohors ("enclosed yard," and by extension, perhaps associated with curia "sovereign's assembly", those assembled in the yard; company, cohort, from com- "together" + stem hort- related to hortus "garden, plot of ground", which can mean:
*A court of law.
*A courtroom, in which a court of law carries out its business.
*The retinue and larger household and entourage of a Monarch, Prince of the church or a high noble or - family (for example: Court of St. James's), see: royal court, noble court.
*A social group of animals, notably kangaroos
*An architectural feature, see: courtyard.
*The playing surface/floor in tennis, basketball or volleyball, see Tennis court; Court (basketball); Court (volleyball)

As a name it refers to:
Court is a municipality in the Canton of Berne, Switzerland.
*Courts Plc, a furniture company located mostly in the Caribbean and Asia, the European parent went into administration in 2004.[1]
