David May (born June 24, 1970 in Oldham, Lancashire) was an English football player. He was a centre half who could also play at right-back.

David May started his career with Blackburn Rovers as a trainee before graduating to the first team, making almost 125 appearances. May played well and became a stalwart of the Rovers team, but left before they won the English Premiership in the 1994/95 season.

He was sold to Manchester United for £1.4million, but failed to hold down a first team place. He was a reliable, if slow, back-up in defence for Alex Ferguson's side, and did his job well whenever called upon. May became popular with the Old Trafford faithful for the way he led the celebrations in 1998/99 when the club won the European Champions' League against Bayern Munich despite featuring very little throughout the campaign.

May was then loaned out to Huddersfield Town in order to assist the managerial career of his old team-mate Steve Bruce. In his first game playing for the 'Terriers' though he unfortunately picked up an injury and had to return for treatment to Old Trafford.

At the end of his contract in 2003 he was released and was snapped up by Burnley manager Stan Ternent, an old friend of Ferguson's, in order to bolster his leaky defence. May captained the Burnley side throughout the 2003/04 season and made a significant contribution to the team. His lack of pace cost him a contract for any longer than 12 months - in an away game at Coventry City he was easily outpaced by Julian Joachim despite having a significant headstart, much to the despair of the Burnley fans.

After his one year spell at Burnley, May played at an amateur level for several more years, and finally retired to work in the wine distribution industry. It was rumoured throughout his career that despite his playing for Manchester United he was a childhood fan of their bitter rivals, Manchester City.
