David Wayne

This article is about the famous actor. For the late lead singer of the band Metal Church, see Metal Church.

David Wayne (born Wayne James McMeekan on 30 January 1914 in Traverse City, Michigan; died 9 February 1995 in Santa Monica, California) was a Broadway, film, and television actor, with a career spanning nearly half a century. Most often a supporting player, he was memorable as a charming cad opposite Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn in Adam's Rib. Wayne played the child killer, originally portrayed by Peter Lorre, in the masterful 1951 remake of M, a chance to see Wayne in an intriguing leading role. He also played the "Mad Hatter," one of the recurring villains in the 1960s TV series Batman. He co-starred with Jim Hutton in the 1970s television series Ellery Queen (he played Ellery Queen's widowed father), and Wayne was most recently well-known as the curmudgeonly Dr. Amos Wetherby in the TV series House Calls.
