David Wayne

Wayne James McMeekan on

Traverse City, Michigan; died
9 February 1995 in
Santa Monica, California) was a
Broadway,
film, and
television actor, with a career spanning nearly half a century. Most often a
supporting player, he was memorable as a charming cad opposite
Spencer Tracy and
Katharine Hepburn in
Adam's Rib. Wayne played the child killer, originally portrayed by
Peter Lorre, in the masterful
1951 remake of
M, a chance to see Wayne in an intriguing
leading role. He also played the "
Mad Hatter," one of the recurring villains in the
1960s TV series Batman. He co-starred with
Jim Hutton in the 1970s television series
Ellery Queen (he played Ellery Queen's widowed father), and Wayne was most recently well-known as the curmudgeonly Dr. Amos Wetherby in the
TV series House Calls.
