Deewar
Deewar, or
Deewaar (
Hindi: दीवार,
Urdu: دیوار), is a classic
Indian movie, directed by Indian director
Yash Chopra. The movie built upon the angry young persona of
Amitabh Bachchan. The movie followed
Zanjeer another path breaking movie for
Amitabh Bachchan. The movie came in a time when the lofty heights of freedom movements were dashed by stark reality of corruption that had seeped into the society. The movie is remembered for its catchy dialogues(
Salim-
Javed) and breath-taking performances by the lead actor
Amitabh Bachchan who was ably supported by
Shashi Kapoor, playing the role of his younger brother.
The movie tells the story of two brothers, Vijay and Ravi Verma, who follow different career paths(of a smuggler and a cop respectively). Vijay is the elder one and has seen his mother go through hard times to bring up her sons. So he follows the path of crime to make easy money. Ravi joins the police force, though not intentionally, but for
livelihood.
As the professions chosen by them are so contrasting in nature, and since they live in the same city (in fact the same house) they were very naturally bound to confront each other. Their mom has to make a choice now, between the two sons. Being an idealist, she chooses to support Ravi.
* Aaj khush to bahut hoge tum.....jo aaj tak tumhare mandir ki siidiyan nahin chada....jisne kabhi tumhare samne haath nahin jode wo aaj tumhare saamne haath failaye khada hai.......ye tumhari jeet nahin haar hai haar......hum ghar se beghar ho gaye......mera baap jeeteji mar gaya.....meri maa suhagan hote huye bhi vidhwa bani rahi....lekin aaj tak maine tumse kuch nahin maanga....(Vijay addressing the gods: You must be very happy today that someone who hasn't climbed the steps of your temple, someone who never
folded hands in front of you - that same someone is standing with hands spread in front of you. It is not your victory but defeat. We had lost our shelter; My dad died; My mom had to live like a widow though she wasn't one for many years. Yet, I have never asked you for anything, ...till today).
