Devil Fruit

A Devil fruit, (悪"の実 Akuma no Mi) renamed Cursèd Fruit in the American dub, is a fictional fruit from the manga and anime series of One Piece by Eiichirō Oda that, when consumed, gives the consumer a power or special trait. There are more then 100 types of Devil Fruit, SBS questions: One Piece Manga - Vol.4 Chapter 33, Fan question: About how many are there in the "Devil Fruit Series", and what kind of fruits will turn up? they come in different shapes, colors, and all Devil Fruits have swirl marks on them of some kind. Only one bite is needed for the power of a Devil Fruit to be yours, and after that, the Devil Fruit becomes a simple, useless, disgusting fruit. Although, it has been shown that you do not even need to bite or chew it. If you swallow it whole, as Buggy did, the effects are still the same.

With this new power comes a weakness, though, as the Devil Fruit user is cast away by the sea, and becomes helpless if submerged in water (or "become a hammer" as most characters in the series slang it). However, if the user's body is permanently changed by the fruit, like Luffy's is, then the user's ability can still be manipulated by outside sources underwater (for example, Luffy's neck could still be stretched). The weakness to the sea can prove deadly to many Devil Fruit users, as most are pirates who are sailing the Grand Line.

It is impossible to eat two Devil Fruits. A common rumor, as told by Cipher Pol's Jyabura, consists of Devil Fruits housing actual devils, the likes of which will fight when placed in proximity of one another. The resulting battle would destroy the user's body. Nevertheless, Blueno contradicted such a claim, stating that Grand Line scientists have noted only the phemonenon of one's body destroying itself if one is to consume two Devil Fruits.

Types of Devil Fruits

Fruits introduced so far, are classified into three different groups: Paramecia, Zoan, and Logia.

Paramecia-type (超人系 Chōjin-kei, read as Paramishia), the most common, is literally read as "Superhuman". These alter the user's body in some way. For example: Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi (Rubber Rubber Fruit, also known as the "Gum Gum" fruit in the English dub), which changes the user's body into stretchable rubber; also, Buggy the Clown's Bara Bara no Mi (Chop Chop Fruit), which gives the user command over splitting apart his own body and controlling the pieces at will.Paramecia fruits can be divided into several subcategories, as it is impossible to generalize the powers. For instance, Luffy's Gomu Gomu fruit is always active, meaning that he's a rubber human at all times. Other users, like Miss Valentine or Miss Doublefinger must mentally activate the changes in their bodies, while again others like Foxy and Mr. 5 can't change their bodies at all.

Zoan-type (動物系 Dōbutsu-kei, read as Zōn-kei), from "Zoanthropy," is the Animal Transformation Class. Most commonly, there are three forms available - Original form, "full" transformed form (where the animal's size is often greatly exaggerated), and a hybrid form. However, with the "Rumble Ball", developed by the Straw Hat Pirates' doctor, Tony Tony Chopper, more forms can be utilized. Examples of these fruits include the Tori Tori (Bird) Fruit, and the Ushi Ushi (Cow) Fruits. Zoan Devil fruits also come in different "models" that result in variations of the animal. For example, the Inu Inu (Dog) Fruit has a Jackal model, a Dachshund model, and a Wolf model, and the Neko Neko (Cat) fruit has a Leopard model. Zoan is also the best for close combat in that it enhances the user's natural abilities with added animal strength. It was stated by Chopper that carnivorous zoans are more powerful in combat.

Logia-type (自然系 Shizen-kei, read as Rogia-kei) is the most powerfull and rare fruit with the "Nature" class. With these fruits, the user may actually become a natural element in its entirety. Note that these are not limited to the classical elements: fire, water, earth and wind, but includes physical states like smoke. Even in their default states, Logia users are near invincible, taking no damage from physical attacks. Any blow will pass through the Logia user's body automatically, with the targeted area becoming the users element upon contact. The Logia user has to mentally "activate" his power in order to accomplish this, as shown on the episode where Luffy hit Smoker with a Gomu Gomu no Rocket while he was distracted. There can also be a case like Sir Crocodile's, who honed his abilities to the point of turning the activation of the power into a reflex. If the ability is honed well enough, the user can manipulate anything related to their element, as well. For instance, through Crocodile's sand powers, he could control dryness and absorb moisture. In a similar example, Enel could utilize the heat of his electricity to melt down, and reshape metals, by way of smelting.

Ever since their abilities are gained, they are neither completely human nor element in their default state. For example, a blow can pass right through the user, while he maintains the rest of his body, and even can hold onto objects at the same time. However, Logia users have the option of turning completely into their element if they so wish. This is often used for crossing great distances quickly, or avoiding blows should their weakness have been discovered. Thus far, the only thing except seastone which allows for physical harm on a Logia user are natural weaknesses which, when exploited, negate the Logia power. An example of this is Luffy landing blows on Enel regardless of the Goro Goro fruit's electric powers because of his rubber body.

Logia users can tap unlimited amounts of their respective elements from their own bodies, and the "extracted" element be manipulated however the user wishes.Logia users cannot control already physically existing forms of their element, but they may manipulate their surroundings into generating it - examples are Aokiji freezing an ocean, and Enel turning a cloud into a thunder cloud.

Examples of Logia-type fruits are Suna Suna (Sand Sand; Sir Crocodile) and Moku Moku (Smoke Smoke; Smoker).

List of Devil Fruits

It should be noted that many of the fruit names come from Japanese onomatopoeia and Japanese vocabulary.

The format followed is:
*Japanese Name (Translation) / Dub Name (English Manga Name): Description

If the dub name and translation are the same, only the dub name will be listed. Similarly, if the English manga name and the dub name are the same, only the dub name will be listed.

Paramecia Fruits

* Gomu Gomu no Mi (Rubber Rubber Fruit) / Gum Gum Fruit: Permanently turns the body into extremely durable natural rubber, allowing the user to stretch his or her body like rubber and become immune to regular blows, falling, bullets, and lightning. However, the user's body can be affected by sharp objects, explosives, and fire. A possible theory for how a rubber body is possible is that eating the fruit causes a major collagen build-up in the body; skin, bones and all. "Gomu" is the Japanese term for "rubber." Eaten by Monkey D. Luffy.
* Bara Bara no Mi / Chop Chop Fruit: Allows the user to split his or her body apart and control the pieces at will, also becoming permanently immune to being cut. "Bara" refers to the sound a knife or other sharp object makes when it hits a cutting board, while "Barabara" means to disconnect. Eaten by Buggy the Clown.
* Sube Sube no Mi / Slip Slip Fruit: Makes the user's body slippery, causing virtually all objects to slide off of his or her body, protecting the user completely from harm in most situations. "Subesube" means "silky". Sube may also come from suberine, a fat that can be found in cells. Apparently, the fruit also makes the consumer slim if they were obese. Eaten by Alvida.
* Bomu Bomu no Mi / Bomb Bomb Fruit: Allows the user to make any part of his or her body explode with no harm done to the user; this even applies to hair, mucus, and breath. "Bomu" is, obviously enough, the term for "bomb." Eaten by Mr. 5.
* Kilo Kilo no Mi / Kilo Kilo Fruit: Allows the user to change his or her weight, from anywhere between 1 and 10,000 kilograms (hence the name, "Kilo Kilo"). In the American version, pounds replaces kilograms, despite the fruit name remaining the same. Eaten by Miss Valentine.
* Hana Hana no Mi (Bloom Bloom Fruit) / Hana Hana Fruit: Allows the user to replicate and sprout pieces of his or her body multiple times from the surface of any object or living thing. However, they can't be formed in areas where there is not enough space, such as inside someone else's body. It has been shown that the user feels any pain directed onto the extra limbs. "Hana" is, in this context, the Japanese word for "bloom". Referred to by its original Japanese name in the English dub. Eaten by Ms. All Sunday / Nico Robin.
* Doru Doru no Mi (Candle Candle Fruit) / Wax Wax Fruit: Allows the user to tap unlimited amounts of wax from his/her body, and create things from it. When the wax hardens, it literally becomes as strong as steel. This ability is not to be confused with a logia power, as the user cannot turn himself into wax, and thusly is not immune to physical attacks. "Doru" comes from the Japanese word for candle, "kyandoru." Eaten by Mr. 3.
* Baku Baku no Mi / Munch Munch Fruit: Allows the user to chew through and eat anything he or she wants, and subsequently build it into his or her body, or fuse the eaten objects. The user can "eat" him /herself, and alter his/her body structure at will. The users mouth can be enlarged to extreme degrees. "Baku" is the sound of sheet metal being struck, while "Paku" is the sound of eating. It could also come from the phrase "baku baku tabeteru", which can be likened to "chowing down" in English. Eaten by Wapol.
* Mane Mane no Mi / Clone Clone Fruit: Allows the user to turn into anyone he or she has touched. "Mane" means "imitation." When the user changes, he also imitates the copied persons flexibility, strength, etc. One Piece Anime - Episode 116 and One Piece Manga - Volume 21 Chapter 188, Sanji figures out that Mr. 2 has to change back to normal to attack. and can switch back to his normal state by touching his face with his left hand. Eaten by Mr. 2 Bon Clay.
* Supa Supa no Mi / Dice Dice Fruit: Turns the users body permanently into steel and allows the user to turn any surface of his or her body into a steel blade. "Supasupa" is the noise a knife makes when cutting through something. Different from "Bara," the noise the knife makes when it hits the board. Eaten by Daz Bonez, also known as Mr. 1.
* Toge Toge no Mi / Spike Spike Fruit: Allows the user to grow spikes on any part of his or her body, and turn any body part entirely into a spike. The user can also somehow utilize "Toge doping" to greatly increase their muscle mass. All the spikes are capable of going through rock walls. "Toge" means "spike." Eaten by Miss Doublefinger.
* Ori Ori no Mi (Cage Cage Fruit): Allows the user to place iron shackles on his or her foes, by having them pass through the users body parts. "Ori" means "jail.", or "cage." Eaten by Hina.
* Bane Bane no Mi (Spring Spring Fruit): Allows the user to turn his or her limbs into springs. It is unknown whether the rest of the body can be changed as well. "Bane" means spring. Eaten by Bellamy the Hyena.
* Noro Noro no Mi (Slow Slow Fruit): Allows the user to emit "Noroma Photons," which significantly slow any object he or she strikes down for thirty seconds. "Noro" means slowly or sluggishly. Eaten by Foxy the Silver Fox.
* Doa Doa no Mi (Door Door Fruit): Allows the user to create doors through and on every surface he or she touches, and make doors through the atmosphere leading into a pocket dimension. "Doa" means "door" (a Western-style door). Eaten by Blueno.
* Awa Awa no Mi (Bubble Bubble Fruit): Allows the user to emit and control soap and bubbles that can not only clean off dirt but can also "clean off" power, essentially draining ones energy (and leaving them clean and shiny). This ability is not to be confused with a Logia power, as the user cannot turn herself into soap and bubbles, and thusly is not immune to physical attacks. "Awa" means "bubble." Eaten by Kalifa.
* Hiso Hiso no Mi (Whisper Whisper Fruit) (anime only): Allows the user to understand the heart of an animal or in other words allow him or her to speak to animals. "Hisohiso" means "whisperingly." Eaten by Apis.
* Kama Kama no Mi (Sickle Sickle Fruit) (anime only): Gives the user two-inch long claws and the ability to attack with blades of air. "Kama" means "sickle." Eaten by Erik the Whirlwind.
* Goe Goe no Mi (Voice Voice Fruit) (anime only): Allows user to create beams of sound by shouting. "Goe" is a variation of "koe," meaning "voice" in Japanese. Eaten by El Drago.
* Kachi Kachi no Mi (Rock Rock Fruit) (anime only): Allows the body of the user to be rock hard and heat up body temperature. "Kachikachi" means "knocking stones together." Eaten by Bear King.
*Samu Samu no Mi (Silly Silly Fruit) (SBS Only): Makes the eater tell stupid, bad, and flat jokes. Humor that is described as chilly is an expression in Japan and Korea that describe how corny the humor is. It was stated in an edition of the SBS question corner by Oda. Eaten by a person who asked Oda about it.

Zoan Fruits

* Hito Hito no Mi / Human Human Fruit: Allows the user to turn into a human, and gives an animal consumer human intelligence. It has been stated that a human user simply would become "enlightened" SBS questions: One Piece Manga - Vol.20 Chapter 184, Fan question: What happens if a human eats the Human Human Fruit? , and unable to swim. "Hito" means "person". Eaten by Tony Tony Chopper.

* Tori Tori no Mi, Model Falcon (Bird Bird Fruit, Model Falcon) / Tweet Tweet Fruit: Allows the user to turn into a large falcon at will. "Tori" means "bird". Eaten by Pell.
* Inu Inu no Mi, Model Dachshund (Dog Dog Fruit, Model Dachshund): Allows the user to turn into a large Dachshund at will. "Eaten" (more appropriately, merged with) by Mr. 4's gun, Lassou.
* Mogu Mogu no Mi (Mole Mole Fruit): Allows the user to turn into a large mole at will. "Mogu" is taken from "mogura" which means "mole"; "mogumogu" means "mumbling" or "chewing one's words", which describes the way Miss Merry Christmas speaks. Eaten by Miss Merry Christmas.
* Inu Inu no Mi, Model Jackal (Dog Dog Fruit, Model Jackal): Allows the user to turn into a large jackal at will. "Inu" means "dog." Eaten by Chaka.

* Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model Giraffe (Cow Cow Fruit, Model Giraffe): Allows the user to transform into a giraffe. "Ushi" means "cow." Eaten by Kaku. NOTE: Giraffes are actually related to cows, showing an amount of intelligence on the subject by Oda.
* Neko Neko no Mi, Model Cheetah (Cat Cat Fruit, Model Cheetah) (anime only): Possibly eaten by Chiqicheetah of the Foxy Pirates. While it is never explicitly named, and in fact it is never explicitly confirmed that he has eaten a Devil Fruit at all, his demonstrated abilities, including changing from cheetah-man to full-cheetah shapes, match those of a Zoan user.

Logia fruits

* Moku Moku no Mi / Smoke Smoke Fruit (Plume Plume Fruit): Allows the user to transform into smoke at will as well as control it. "Mokumoku" means silent, and "moku" is an anagram of "kumo", which means "cloud", "moku" is also the sound billowing smoke makes. Eaten by Smoker (Dub: Chaser).
* Mera Mera no Mi / Flare Flare Fruit: Allows the user to transform into fire at will as well as control it. "Meramera" is the noise a fire makes when it burns. Eaten by Portgas D. Ace (Dub: Portgaz D. Trace).
* Suna Suna no Mi / Sand Sand Fruit: Allows the user to transform into sand at will as well as control it. Its power could be honed to the point where the user could also dry anything the user grasps, killing the living through dehydration, and causing all other matter to crumble to dust. Its effects are weakened by water (any water, as opposed to only sea water) and other liquids (including blood). "Suna" means "sand." Eaten by Sir Crocodile.
* Goro Goro no Mi (Shock Shock Fruit): Allows the user to transform into electricity as well as control it. Rubber can counteract its effects though. "Gorogoro" is the noise thunder makes. Eaten by Eneru (also known as Enel).

* Ame Ame no Mi (Candy Candy Fruit) (anime only): Allows the user to transform into a kind of candy syrup. They can't be hit nor sliced because their body will just absorb the impact or take the blade, though flour can bypass this. "Ame" means "hard candy". Eaten by Captain Gasparde.

Seastone

Seastone (海楼石 Kairōseki), called Sea-Prism Stone in the English anime, is a naturally occurring (though apparently rare) substance that can cancel out Devil Fruit powers. Typically, Seastone is primarily found in the form of restraining devices, such as shackles or cages, and makes out the Marines' prison. Thusly, it is deployed as a Devil-Fruit restriction.

It was stated by captain Smoker that seastone "emits the same energy as the sea", possibly in the form of special wavelengths of some sort.

However, so far the material has only shown any effect upon actual contact with someone who has eaten a Devil Fruit. Upon contact the material drains the victim's body of energy, and robs him of control of his Devil Fruit powers - having the same effect as throwing them into the sea.

The degree of "weakness" induced by the seastone depends on its density and composition; For example, seastone handcuffs robs the prisoner of his abilities, but still allows him to walk around. Seastone only works upon direct and constant contact, which explains how Captain Smoker can carry a seastone-tipped jutte on his back, without it disabling him. (Presumably, even thick clothing will prevent the Seastone's effect from harming the victim.)

There are still multiple hypotheses for exactly how a Seastone negates a Devil Fruit power; one of the most common notes that Seastone contains the same salts and minerals of ocean water, allowing a mimicry of the paralysis that occurs when immersed under the ocean. Another states that Seastone is actually solidified state of the ocean, thus carrying the paralysis function with it.

It is recently discovered that Seastone is harder to break than diamond.

The weakness to the sea is disputable as to how intense it really is. In many cases, we see the Devil fruit user unable to move at all, but in other cases, they can splash around and stay above the water, as Luffy did as a child. However, that may have been because the fruit was only recently consumed. Yet, Buggy the Clown sank completely when he fell into the ocean a few seconds after consuming his fruit, thus disproving this claim. Another theory is that it depends on the person who consumed the fruit, or even what type of fruit was consumed. Mr.2 was also able to stay above water when he first met the Straw Hat pirates.
