Edmonton International Airport
Edmonton International Airport is the
5th busiest airport in
Canada by passenger traffic, and the 13th busiest by aircraft movements. It is the primary air passenger and air cargo facility in
Edmonton, Alberta and a major hub facility for Northern Alberta and Northern Canada. It served 4.5 million passengers in 2005 and is operated by the
Edmonton Airports Authority. Originally constructed in 1960, the airport has undergone a $350 million
CAD renovation and expansion program from 1996-2004 which included the construction of a new (south) terminal, a multi-level parking facility, central hall, commuter facility and a doubling of the
aircraft apron. Future plans include the development of an in-terminal hotel, an 184-room Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, as well as the expansion of the parking facility, the expansion of the U.S. holdroom area, and the partial renovation and expansion of the original terminal. Edmonton International Airport is one of 8 Canadian Airports that has
US Border Pre-clearance facilities.
About 30 minutes (or more) from Edmonton, the Edmonton International Airport is centred around three oil towns,
Devon,
Leduc, and
Nisku. The latter two towns work a lot with the airport, as they contain many hotels, restaurants, guarded parking lots (for those who don't want to pay the airport's parking fee), and hotel-terminal transportation.
As for the airport, the two terminals are shaped in a semicircular design, similar to an upward-facing
chevron(">"). The inside edge of the chevron contains parking. The outside edge contains the aircraft apron, hangars, and runways.
The Terminals
The terminals at EIA are divided into two levels. The upper level contains the Departures area, as well as gates; the lower level contains the Arrivals area.
