False colors

For use of an arbitrary color palette in imaging, see false-color.

In military parlance false colors means flying some other flag than the one that identifies your own side.

In the past this was considered an acceptable action, provided one lowered the false flag, and raised one's own flag, before opening fire.

This phrase is now used in other fields of endeavour.
