FIFA Women's World Cup 1999
The
FIFA Women's World Cup 1999 was held in the
United States and won by
the host team. The final between the U.S. and
China, held at the
Rose Bowl in
Pasadena, California and won in a
penalty shootout by the U.S., was the most-attended women's sports event in history with an official attendance of 90,185.
The USA victory was, however, debatable because the U.S. goalie
Briana Scurry allegedly stepped beyond the goal line numerous times before the Chinese players actually kicked the ball. There, however, was no dispute as to how it ended: after
Brandi Chastain scored on the game-winning
penalty kick, she took off her uniform top, showing a sports bra underneath.
