Fojnica is a town in central
Bosnia and Herzegovina, located west of
Kiseljak and of the capital
Sarajevo. It lies in the valley of the Fojnička River, tributary of the river
Bosna. Fojnica has the most prominent spa in the region of Eastern Europe. Visiting Fojnica for this reason would be an excellent choice. The other most popular spa in Bosnia is in Olovo. Administratively, Fojnica is part of the
Central Bosnia Canton of the
Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In the
1991 census, the population of Fojnica municipality was at 16,227 residents, of which 49.36% were
Bosniaks, 40.91%
Croats, 0.95%
Serbs, 2.44%
Yugoslavs and 6.34% others. The town itself had 6,444 residents: 45% Croats, 41% Bosniaks, 5% Yugoslavs, 2% Serbs and 7% others.
There is also a village named
Fojnica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located on left side of the
Bosna River, between the towns of
Maglaj and
Zavidovići.

Information about the townFojnica Spa, one of the most significant health-tourist Center in Bosnia & Herzegovina settled on the same name gold-bearing river. It is possible to visit nearby mountains Pogorelica, Lopata and Zec. Brightness pearl is surely Prokos Lake which is on Vranica mountain (1636 m above the sea level) and it is 22 km far from town.
It is glacier origin and in it is still triton (salamander) very rare endemic species. Lake is sowed with fish and in summer it is possible to swim in it. Around the lake are many cottages in which you can have real home made speciality (sheep's cheese, cream, pie, bred).One of cultural and historical attraction of Fojnica is Franciscan monastery with its archive, museum and library. Humble monastery with little church was made in 1339, and on place where it is now in year 1520. In monastery is saved hump collection of Bosnian medieval aristocracy, and archive has a lot of rare documents in which is famous AHDNAMA, document which Sultan Mehmed the Second El-Fatih gave to Bosnian Franciscans on 28th of May 1463.
