Frobisher Bay

Frobisher Bay, Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada.

Frobisher Bay, December 2005.

Frobisher Bay () is a relatively large inlet of the Labrador Sea in the southeastern corner of Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. It is named for the English navigator Martin Frobisher, who, during his search for the Northwest Passage in 1576, became the first European to visit it. Until 1860, the bay was thought to be a strait separating Baffin Island from another island.

The capital of Nunavut, Iqaluit (formerly also known as Frobisher Bay), lies beside the far end of the bay.

There was recently a choral piece made after this bay. A whaler is stranded at sea with his men. He wants to harpoon just one more whale; "one more whale, the captain cried; one more whale then we'll beat the ice". In the end, the waves turn on them, and takes all but the captain, who becomes "frozen in his lonely grave". It was arranged by Linda Beaupré.
