Game of skill

A game of skill is a game where the outcome is determined mainly by mental and/or physical skill, rather than by pure chance.

One benefit of games of skill is that they are a means of exploring one's own capabilities. Games encourage the player to look at, understand, and experience things. They teach people lessons about themselves and possibly the world, and allow such insights to be passed on to others.

Games of mental skill

A game of mental skill (sometimes called a mind sport) is a game where training of muscles and skill in controlling them offers insignificant advantage, and mental abilities are paramount.

The Mind Sports Organisation promotes the concept that developing excellence in such activities deserves respect similar to that traditionally accorded to sports, in line with the dictum of Plato:The contestant in mental games must train for battle with just as much care as the athlete.

Games of physical skill

Games of physical skill or dexterity test the body more than the brain, although strategic thinking may be required. Whereas mental skill games depend more on knowledge and mind, the division here is not always clear.

Games based solely on body strength are not included in this category: they would be considered games of physical activity.
