Gdańsk Shipyard

Solidarity logo

Gdańsk Shipyard (Stocznia Gdańska) is one of the biggest Polish shipyards. It is placed in Gdańsk, on the left side of Martwa Wisła and on the Ostrów Island. It was created after 1945 on the terrains previously occupied by Kaiserliche Werft (Kaiser's Shipyards) (founded 1844) and Schichau-Werft (founded 1890). During the times of the People's Republic of Poland it was known as the Lenin Shipyard.

The Gdańsk Shipyard gained international fame when Solidarity (Solidarność) was founded there in September 1980.
