Genjutsu (Naruto)

Genjutsu (幻�", "Illusion Techniques"), in the fictional anime and manga series Naruto, are techniques that use the chakra in the victim's nervous system to create illusions; an advanced intellectual Ninjutsu. Genjutsu techniques are notably easier to execute and counter for users of high intelligence, like Nara Shikamaru; for those skilled at chakra control, like Haruno Sakura; and Sharingan-users, like Uchiha Sasuke. The most commonly seen Genjutsu is simple creation of phantasms -- causing the targeted person(s) to hear, see, smell, taste and/or feel sensations that are not actually there in order to manipulate them. In other words, they encompass and control all five senses, but other applications of Genjutsu are rare.

There are several ways to counter Genjutsu. Because it uses the victim's own chakra against him, one can cancel the genjutsu by trying to stop, and thereby disrupt, one's own chakra flow. This is called Genjutsu Kai (幻�"解, "Illusion Technique Cancel"). If this doesn't work, then the only way for the victim to cancel the Genjutsu is having someone else disrupt his chakra flow with theirs through body contact. It has also been seen that if a person caused themself a "shocking" pain (such as a stab wound or broken finger) that they will wake up as well. It should be noted though, that in the case of some high-level Genjutsu techniques, not even pain will break the jutsu.

Kasumi Jusha no Jutsu (Mist Servant Technique)

The user can then hide the projectiles they throw within the illusory ones that the clones throw at their opponents.

Kokuangyo no Jutsu (Bringer-of-Darkness Technique)

::Name: Kokuangyō no Jutsu, �'暗行の�", literally "Bringer of Darkness Technique"::Type: A-rank, Supplementary, Short to mid-range (0-10m)::Users: First Hokage, Second Hokage (anime only) ::Forming the tiger hand seal, this powerful Genjutsu creates an ambience of complete darkness around the surrounding background, enabling the user to attack without being seen.::Although it was the First Hokage that uses this jutsu in the manga, in the anime, however, it was the Second Hokage that utilized it. Because it was the Second that utilised this jutsu only in the anime, this is not considered canon by many fans.

Kori Shinchu no Jutsu (Sly Mind Affect Technique)

::Name: Kori Shinchū no Jutsu, 狐狸心中の�", literally "Sly Mind Affect Technique" ::Type: C-rank, supplementary, mid- to long-range (5+m) ::Users: Oboro, Kagari, Mubi::Kori Shinchū no Jutsu is a Genjutsu which causes the target to travel around in circles. If the ninja is unable to detect the illusion very quickly, they can become exhausted mentally and physically because they are unable to reach their desired area by traveling along the same path over and over.

Magen: Jigoku Koka no Jutsu (Demonic Illusion: Descending Hell Technique)

::Name: Magen: Jigoku Kōka no Jutsu, �"幻・地獄降下の�", literally "Demonic Illusion: Descending Hell Technique"::Type: No rank, Supplementary, Short range (0-5m)::Users: Akadō Yoroi ::Jigoku Kōka no Jutsu is a Genjutsu that causes its opponent to see a vision of a tremendous ball of fire that will descend from the sky to envelope the target. The victims of the jutsu will believe they are being engulfed by a torrent of fire and will flee from their location to safety.::This jutsu only appears in the anime and not in the manga. It is therefore not considered canon by many fans.

Magen: Jubaku Satsu (Demonic Illusion: Tree Bind Death)

::Name: Magen: Jubaku Satsu, �"幻・樹縛殺, literally "Demonic Illusion: Tree Bind Death" English Tree Capture Death::Type: B-rank, Supplementary, Short range (0-5m)::Users: Yūhi Kurenai, Haruno Sakura (Naruto: Narutimate Hero series only)::With this jutsu, the user can make themselves disappear so that they can approach their opponent unnoticed. Once near the desired target, a tree will grow at the target's feet and branches from an illusory tree will bind them from behind so that they are unable to even move or use hand seals. Once the opponent believes that they are captured, the user can then reappear from above the tree and quickly kill the opponent, preferably with a kunai.

Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu (Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique)

::Name: Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu, �"幻・此処非の�", literally "Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique"::Type: C-rank, Supplementary, All ranges::Users: Hagane Kotetsu, Oboro (anime only)::Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu is a rather sophisticated Genjutsu which changes the appearance of a nearby object or climate.

Magen: Kyoten Chiten (Demonic Illusion: Mirror Heaven and Earth Change)

::Name: Magen: Kyōten Chiten, �"幻・鏡天地転, literally "Demonic Illusion: Mirror Heaven and Earth Change"::Type: Kekkei Genkai, No rank, Supplementary, Short range (0-5m)::Users: Uchiha Itachi::Utilizing the copy and counter abilities of the Sharingan, the Uchiha clan member can reverse the Genjutsu casted on them and use it against the original user.

Magen: Narakumi no Jutsu (Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing Technique)

The user will use the rat hand seal that causes an imaginary circle of leaves to spin and envelop the target and then fall away. Once cast, the world will appear normal to the target until they have already seen the illusion.This is first seen being used on Sakura, having her view a dying Sasuke.

Magen: Niju Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu (Demonic Illusion: Double False Surroundings Technique)

::Name: Magen: Nijū Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu, �"幻・二此処非の�", literally "Demonic Illusion: Double False Surroundings Technique"::Type: Unknown, probably: B-rank, Supplementary, All ranges::Users: Oboro::A second atmospheric layer of Genjutsu is placed on top of the first illusion.

Mateki: Mugen'onsa (Demonic Flute: Dream Sound Chain)

::Name: Mateki: Mugen'onsa, �"笛・夢幻音鎖, literally "Demonic Flute: Dream Sound Chain"::Type: B-rank, Supplementary, All ranges ::Users: Tayuya::The recipient will feel like they are tied with numerous wires, restricting their movement. Then, their flesh will begin to melt away from their bones, causing great pain and horror to the person receiving the jutsu. The user must be playing the flute the entire time the Jutsu is being used.

Nehan Shoja no Jutsu (Temple of Nirvana Technique)

::Name: Nehan Shōja no Jutsu, 涅槃精舎の�", literally "Temple of Nirvana Technique" English Nirvana Temple Jutsu::Type: A-rank, Supplementary, All ranges::Users: Yakushi Kabuto::This technique is an encantation spell that allows the caster to place a large body of people into an intense and unconscious state. The spell, however, can be avoided by forming the tiger hand seal and using the dispel skill, dispersing it away.

Ninpo Hyakka Ryōran (Ninja Art: Profusing of Flowers)

::Name: Ninpo Hyakka Ryōran literally Ninja Art: Profusing of Flowers::Type: C-rank, Offensive, Defensive, close to mid-range (0-10m)::Users: Yamanaka Ino (Naruto: Narutimate Hero series only)::Ino casts a Genjutsu illusion that paralyzes the enemy (the foe will see a storm of Cherry Blossoms). This jutsu only exists in Naruto: Narutimate Hero and is likely not canon.

Suzu Senbon no Genkaku (Illusion Bell Needles)

::Name: Suzu Senbon no Genkaku, スズ千本の幻覚, literally "Illusion Bell Needles"::Type: D-rank, Supplementary, All ranges::Users: Kin Tsuchi::Technique which uses special bells attached to throwing needles. The bells ring at a certain frequency and the sound directly affects the brain. This is able to disorient the opponent and create various illusions (has a random D-Rank Genjutsu effect). During the Chunin Exams, Kin used this move on Shikamaru to make him think senbon were coming at him from behind.

Tsukuyomi (Moon Reader)

::Name: Tsukuyomi, 月読, literally "Moon Reader"::Type: Kekkei Genkai, No rank, Supplementary, Short range (0-5m) ::Users: Uchiha Itachi ::Named after the Shinto moon god Tsukuyomi, this genjutsu is one of the most powerful Uchiha jutsu, and is among the highest level of Genjutsu in the Naruto world. It is possible only through the Mangekyō Sharingan. Execution of this technique will trap the victim in an illusory dimensional world where all aspects, including the perception of time, are controlled by the user. The user can then torture the target for as long as desired, inflicting vast mental damage, even enough to kill the target. Targets of this technique will most likely suffer mental collapse; if they are lucky enough to be left alive, they will not be in condition to fight for a while. Tsukuyomi requires that the user make eye contact with his target; however, Itachi seems to be able to force his opponents to make eye contact with him, as he did when he used this technique on Uchiha Sasuke, who had both of his eyes closed prior to Itachi's activation of the technique, but opened them in a shock/fear expression as Itachi used the technique on him. (Note that this may not have been the case; it is equally possible that Sasuke opened his eyes of his own volition, although unwisely.) Itachi also used this technique on Kakashi, and cast the illusion that multiple Itachi clones were stabbing him with katana over a period of three days. The illusion only lasted for one second in the actual world, and left Kakashi incapacitated for over a week until Tsunade gave him medical treatment.

:Such a powerful technique is not without its disadvantages, however. Tsukuyomi is an enormous chakra drain on the user, which discourages its frequent use. In addition, it has been implied in the manga by Kakashi that repeated use of Mangekyō Sharingan has a detrimental effect on the user's eyesight.
