Ghinwa Bhutto (also spelled
Ghinva) is the Chairperson of
Pakistan People's Party Shaheed Bhutto (PPP-SB). The
Lebanese widow of
Murtaza Bhutto, she has staked claim to her share of the Bhutto political legacy. Estranged from her in-laws, Ghinwa has vowed to bring her husband's killers to justice. She lives in
Karachi in the Bhutto family home in
Karachi with her son
Zulfiqar Bhutto (named after his grand-father
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto) and her step-daughter
Fatima Bhutto.
Her sister-in-law,
Benazir Bhutto is among those accused of having been part of the conspiracy to kill Murtaza. Ghinwa has been actively courted by Benazir's rivals. In
1997, she stood for elections unsuccessfully against her mother-in-law and the then Pakistan People's Party President,
Nusrat Bhutto.
In
2002,
Pakistani election authorities rejected her candidacy from contesting in the October 10 polls. She was rejected on the grounds of not possessing the required minimum academic qualification of a university degree.
