Goundamani

Goundamani is one of the most famous Tamil comedians.

Goundamani, like most actors from his era, gained entry into the tamil film industry[Kollywood] due to his strong theatrical background. Known as Mani initially he was later christened KounderMani due to his excellent potrayal of a "Kounder" in one of his early plays. KounderMani or Koundamani was then corrupted into [Goundamani] . The other theory behind his name is that he got it because he belongs to the "Kounder " clan of Coimbatore.

Goundamani was initially a solo act and then paired up with another comedian Senthil to form a comedy duo. Stated as Kollywood's Laurel and Hardy Senthil and Goundamani have entertained people with their rib-tickling slapstick humour for more than two decades now.

Film Career

Goundamani has entertained two generations of Tamil people with his unique style of comedy. His dialogues are woven with sarcasm and contempt.His most famous piece of comedy is the "Vazhapazam" (Banana) joke with Senthil, in the film Karagaatakkaran. He is a household name in Tamil Nadu; his jokes cater to every age-group and class of audience.

Some of his memorable movies are with heroic leads such as Sathyaraj or Karthik, and has teamed up with three generations of such actors. In several Tamil films, he has even accompanied the hero in almost all of the scenes (sometimes also in the songs). He has acted with Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan , Arjun, Vijay, Ajith, Jayaram, and Prabhu. In the 90's when he was at the peak of his career, it was considered that a Tamil film would be a box office hit only if he acted in it.

In many movies he would deliver dialogues with double meaning (double entendre).

He once suffered from kidney stones and Jaundice. He had the stones removed at the GEM Hospital in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

Filmography

Owing to his ill-health, he lost his traditional-old body, which is also one of the reasons for his waning times in the tinsel town.
