Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik Roshan in "Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon"

Hrithik Roshan (Devanagari: ऋतिक रोशन, Pronunciation: / /; (born January 10, 1974), nicknamed Duggu, is a Bollywood actor.

Personal life

Hrithik was born in Mumbai, India, to actress Pinky and actor Rakesh Roshan, who was himself the son of a well-known film-music director Roshan. Rakesh later turned to film production and direction. Hrithik's entry into acting extended the Roshan family role in Bollywood to the third generation.

The actor is married to Suzanne Khan, his high-school sweetheart. Suzanne is the daughter of actor/director Sanjay Khan and sister of actor Zayed Khan. Film clans (see List of Bollywood film clans) do tend to intermarry.

Hrithik Roshan and Suzanne Khan welcomed their first child, a baby boy, into the world on March 28, 2006, at 3:08pm at Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, India. The child will be named rehaan in a naming ceremony to be conducted sometime later.

Career

Hrithik's first movie role was as a child artist in the 1980 movie Aasha, where he extra'd as a dancing boy at six years old. He then appeared in Aap Ki Deewane in the same year. However his best remembered performance as a child star was in Bhagwan Dada, with Sridevi and Rajnikanth in 1986. Many years later he worked behind the camera, supporting his director father in films such as Karan Arjun and Koyla. While he was working on the movie Karan Arjun, the film's lead, Salman Khan, urged Hrithik to try his hand at acting. It is said that Salman gave Hrithik lessons in body-building and acting.

Hrithik achieved fame when he debuted in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai opposite debutante starlet Amisha Patel in 2000. The film was directed by his father and catapaulted him to the top of Bollywood with Hrithik-mania. It was the highest grossing film of 2000 and winner of the Filmfare Best Movie Award. Hrithik's performance earned him the Filmfare Best Debut Award and the Filmfare Best Actor Award. That year, Hrithik also starred in Fiza and Mission Kashmir. Though they were not as successful in the box office, both were highly acclaimed by critics. Hrithik was nominated for Best Actor in Fiza and Mission Kashmir was nominated for Best Film at Filmfare.

In 2001, Hrithik appeared in two films. Yaadein was his first critical/commercial flop. But Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was a massive hit due to its ensemble cast which included Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. Despite the all-star cast, Hrithik came away with the best reviews (along with Kajol).

Hrithik had a tough year in 2002. All three of his releases were box office failures, including the much-hyped Na Tum Jaano Na Hum and Mujhse Dosti Karoge!.

The actor made a major comeback in 2003. Koi Mil Gaya, Hrithik's first film directed by his father since his debut, was the highest grosser of the year. The film won every major award for Best Film and Hrithik was awarded with his second Filmfare Best Actor Award. The actor had only one release in 2004, in a highly lauded performance in Lakshya, directed by good friend Farhan Akhtar.

Hrithik took over a two-year break from acting before resurfacing with 2006's Krrish [1]. The movie also stars Priyanka Chopra and Naseeruddin Shah and is directed by Hrithik's father Rakesh Roshan. This sequel to Koi... Mil Gaya is currently the highest grossing release of the year and 3rd largest box office success of all-time [2].

Like many other actors, Hrithik tours in Bollywood stage shows. His first stage appearance was at the Lux Zee Cine Awards in 2001.

Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 2 (2006)

He is currently filming for Dhoom 2, a sequel to the 2004 hit Dhoom in which he plays a villain role for the first time. The film is due in November 2006.
