Mississippi. As of
2000, the population is 2,274. Its
county seat is
Mayersville6.
According to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,143

mi²). 1,070 km² (413 mi²) of it is land and 73 km² (28 mi²) of it (6.41%) is water.

population density was 2/km² (6/mi²). There were 877 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 36.32%

There were 726 households out of which 34.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.60% were
married couples living together, 16.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% were non-families. 26.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.37.
In the county the population was spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 10.90% from 18 to 24, 30.90% from 25 to 44, 19.90% from 45 to 64, and 10.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 113.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 130.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $19,936, and the median income for a family was $23,913. Males had a median income of $23,167 versus $17,115 for females. The

poverty line, including 43.20% of those under age 18 and 41.00% of those age 65 or over.
Of Note:Just before the Civil War, Issaquena County had the highest concentration of slaves at 92.5%. 115 owners held 7,244 slaves.
