Joseph K.

For the musical group, see Josef K (band).

Joseph K. (or Josef K. in the original German) is the protagonist of Franz Kafka's The Trial (Der Prozeß). Throughout the book, his last name is never given in full, although the suggestion of "Kafka" is inevitable. Usually addressed as just "K.," Joseph is a victim of the totalitarian law that is dominant throughout The Trial. Also, Joseph K. is the protagonist of Kafka's short story "Ein Traum" ("A Dream").

Film portrayals

In the 1962 Orson Welles movie adaptation of The Trial, Joseph K. is played by Anthony Perkins. Kyle MacLachlan portrays him in the 1993 version.

In The Outtakes from the First Series of Britcom Black Books, Manny's song 'Who Will buy my Book to-day?' mentions 'Leopold Bloom and Joseph K and Bridget Jones'.
