The Kurmanji Kurdish dialect (using Latin Kurmanjî) contains 31 letters.

The Turkish state does not recognise the alphabet. This has caused new conflicts since 2003, when names in Kurdish were allowed to be registered, four letters of Kurdish alphabet were unavailable due to their absence in the Turkish alphabet.
The older Sorani Kurdish dialect is mainly written using a modified Arabic-based alphabet with 33 letters. Unlike the regular Arabic alphabet, which is an abjad, vowels are mandatory, making the Sorani a true alphabet.
