Kuybyshev (town)



Kuybyshev, known as Kainsk until 1935 (Russian: Куйбышев), is a town in Novosibirsk Oblast in Russia, located on the Om River (Irtysh's tributary) some 315 km west of Novosibirsk. Population: 48,500 (2005 est.); 40,000 (1970).

Kuybyshev was founded as a military fort named Kainsky Pas (Каинский Пас) in 1722. In 1782, it was renamed Kainsk (Каинск) of the Tobol namestnichestvo and granted a town status. In 1804, it became a part of the Tomsk guberniya. In 1935, it was renamed Kuybyshev after Valerian Kuybyshev, who had been exiled to Kainsk in 1907 and lived here for two years.

Location of the town is 55°26'40.95"N 78°19'43.97"E
