Leadgate, County Durham
Leadgate is a village in
County Durham, in
England. It is situated to the north-east of
Consett.
Leadgate was the home of the workers and staff of the Eden colliery which opened in 1844, and was closed on the 18 July 1980.Leadgate now stands as a run down village with high unemployment and crime rates. This was not helped by the closing of the
Consett steelworks also in 1980. This was mainly due to the Government at the time. Not much has changed since 1980 and plans to regenerate the area have been on the local councils' planning board for some time. There are a lot of
pubs in Leadgate including the "Golden Lion".
