List of Mayors and Chiefs of Government of Buenos Aires A
list of Mayors and Chiefs of Government of the city of Buenos Aires ,
Argentina 's capital, since its
federalisation .
Its first Mayor (
Spanish Intendente ) was
Torcuato de Alvear appointed, following the law of federalisation of Buenos Aires, directly by
president Julio Argentino Roca .
Since 1996, following the
1994 reform of the Argentine Constitution , the city gained autonomous status and now the Chiefs of Government (
Jefe de Gobierno ) of the city are elected by its citizens. The office of Vice-Chief (
Subjefe de Gobierno ) was also created. The first Chief of Government to be elected was
Fernando de la Rúa , who would later become
President of Argentina .
In 2006, Chief
Aníbal Ibarra was deprived of his position following the
impeachment about the
Cromagnon nightclub tragedy , leaving Vice-Chief
Jorge Telerman in charge of the office. The
next election is due in 2007, with Telerman likely to stand for re-election with the support of many centre-left politicians, against the possible candidature of
Daniel Scioli , current Vice-President of Argentina.
