The London Borough of Lewisham is a London borough in southeast London. It was formed in 1965 by an amalgamation of the former Boroughs of Lewisham and Deptford.
According to the 2001 census Lewisham has a population of 248,922. It is 66% White, 12% Black Caribbean and 9% Black African. 50% of households are owner-occupiers.

The election of this council constituted the practical creation of the London Borough of Lewisham. Though it was elected in 1964, it did not take over administration of services until a year later.
