M60 motorway

M62 motorway

The M66 is a short motorway in England. It starts near Rawtenstall in Lancashire, and goes south to meet the M62 and M60 motorways just north of Manchester.

Junction 1 of the motorway serves Ramsbottom, junction 2 is between Bury on the west and Heywood on the east. Junction 3 is near the Bury trading estate Pilsworth. Junction 4 is where it joins the M62 and M60 motorways near Whitefield. The only exits from Junction 4 are onto either the M60 or M62.

The M66 is linked to the M65 motorway by a trunk road section of the A56. The A56(T) travels almost due north from M66 Junction 1a to M65 Junction 8 at Hapton.

Prior to the year 2000, there had been a disconnected section of the M66 on the south east side of Manchester, between Stockport and the M67 motorway. For many years, it had been intended that this would form the southern end of the M66 when the two sections were joined by the proposed eastern half of the Manchester Outer Ring Road. However, by the time the link was completed in 2000, it had been decided to renumber the entire Manchester Outer Ring Road to be the M60.

Statutory Instruments

Each motorway in England requires that a Statutory Instrument be published, detailing the route of the road, before it can be built. The dates given on these Statutory Instruments relate to when the document was published, and not when the road was built. Provided below is an incomplete list of the Statutory Instruments relating to the route of the M66.
* Statutory Instrument 1973 No. 1142: M66 Motorway (Bury Easterly Bypass Northern Section) And Connecting Roads Scheme 1973 S.I. 1973/1142
* Statutory Instrument 1996 No. 2158: M66 Motorway (Bury Easterly Bypass Northern Section) (Junction 2 Southbound Off-Slip) (Detrunking) Order 1996 S.I. 1996/2158
* Statutory Instrument 1996 No. 2159: M66 Motorway (Bury Easterly Bypass Northern Section) And Connecting Roads Scheme 1973 (Variation) Scheme 1996 S.I. 1996/2159
