Master P
Percy Robert Miller (born
April 29,
1967), better known as
Master P, is a
rap artist and CEO and founder of
No Limit Records. His son is the rapper,
Romeo.
Master P lived in
New Orleans' infamous
Calliope Projects as a child. He has two brothers, Vyshonn (rapper
Silkk the Shocker) and Corey (rapper
C Murder). A third younger brother of his, Kevin, was murdered. His parents divorced, and he split his time between his father's family in New Orleans, and his mother in
Richmond, California. He attended the
University of Houston & Texas A&M on a basketball scholarship, but left and returned to Richmond to live with his mother and study business at Merritt Junior College in nearby
Oakland.
In 1989, he inherited $10,000 from his grandfather and opened a record store called No Limit, which he later converted to a record label. He used the label to promote his first album in 1991. The label has released and produced albums by other artists such as
Snoop Dogg,
Mystikal, and Miller's siblings and son.
He is also an actor and film producer, appearing in both movies and television. He has made guest appearances on "", "
Oz", "
Moesha", and his son's series
Romeo! His film appearances include the comedy "Uncle P," "I Got the Hook-Up," the action film "Hollywood Homicide", the popular film "Gone In 60 Seconds", and computer hacking movie "Takedown". He also made a brief and uncredited appearance in
Scary Movie 3He also had small stint as a wrestler in
WCW. Master P was brought into the organization after it's flagship
Monday Nitro show slipped behind rival
WWE's
Raw show in ratings. Master P's job was not as a wrestler per se, but as a manager-microphone man, who recruited wrestlers and ran
gimmicks. Master P was supposed to bring a hip, urban, black flavor to WCW, an organization long associated with the South and whites; it was hoped Master P could also draw younger viewers away from Raw.
Master P's gimmick was a stable he called the
No Limit Soldiers. Their entrance music was Master P's rap, and he sometimes performed for the crowd. The rivalry that initiated them was with the
West Texas Rednecks, who's theme song was
I Hate Rap. The Rednecks were over-the-top hick stereotypes (and heels) who clashed with the No Limit Soldiers, who were faces. However, the gimmick blew up in the faces of WCW, as the Rednecks were cheered and the No Limit Soldiers booed, and the theme song for the Rednecks even charted in some radio areas.
Ricky Williams was taken number 5 overall in the NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints. Mike Ditka, who was in charge of the Saints' draft, traded away numerous future #1 draft picks to secure the slot to pick Williams. He was projected as "game-changin running back" in the mold of Jim Brown. Given these circumstances, Williams was seemingly guaranteed a huge, if not record-breaking, payday.
Master P, despite having no negotiating background or formal training, represented Williams in contract negotiations. The contract was one of the lowest in 10 years for any 1st round draft pick in the NFL, and hinged entirely on on-field performance, instead of the guaranteed money Williams could have commanded given his draft position and press clippings.
Later, Williams fired Master P as manager and hired experienced agents to handle his future contract deals. The agents managed to successfully renegotiate part of Williams contract on more favorable terms to Williams.
Master P has not represented any other professional athlete since in contract negotiations.
Master P participated in the second season of
ABC's
Dancing With the Stars, which premiered on
January 5,
2006. His son,
Romeo, had been scheduled to appear on the show, but due to an injury he received while playing a game of basketball, he had to withdraw.
Master P quickly became a lightning rod for controversy on the show. Refusing to wear ballroom shoes and often times looking uninterested in dancing, he received some of the lowest scores from the judges. Despite his lack of ballroom dancing skills, he survived elimination in the first three weeks of the show, due to the call-in and online voting from viewers. On January 26, 2006, Master P and his partner,
Ashly Delgrosso, received a score of 8 out of 30 from the judges, the lowest score ever given in the history of the series. Many people speculated that due to his extensive fan base, Master P would stay in until close to the end; however, on January 27, 2006, he was voted off the show.
Miller is married, and has seven children. He is the father of rapper/actor
Romeo.Master P has been seen attending the
New Orleans Saints football games. Two of his brothers
Silkk Tha Shocker and
C-Murder are also rappers. Miller owns a home in
Baton Rouge, LA.
