From
Lego's
Bionicle franchise, the
Matoran are the "average" people of the Bionicle world. The Matoran have a work based culture and uphold many
virtues, primarily Unity, Duty and Destiny. In ancient times they lived in
Metru Nui until
Makuta came and put them into a deep slumber until the
Toa Metru did rescue the sleeping Matoran and brought them to the
island of Mata Nui where they lived until the
Toa came and the fall of Makuta began culminating in the coming of the seventh Toa and the destruction of Makuta's lair of Mangaia. Some other facts: Matoran do not have the control necessary to use Masks of Power. However, the Matoran Kanohi keep them "alive", because if a Matoran is without a mask, they will go into a coma-like state almost immediately.
Ta-Matoran wear red, yellow, black, and sometimes orange (with Takua being an exception, as he wears a blue mask). Having the element of fire, they have a natural resistance to the extreme heat of their forges. They tend to be diligent and responsible; focusing on the virtue of Duty and its principle of Courage. Most were employed in
Metru Nui as forgers, making useful tools from molten
protodermis; the best forged
Kanoka Disks into
Kanohi Masks. On
Mata Nui they were lava farmers (directing lava where it would be useful) and members of the Ta-Koro Guard; they also enjoy lava surfing in their spare time.
Ga-Matoran are in all shades of blue. These water Matoran live on the shores of the sea, so they have a sleeker build, better lung capacity, and other physical advantages for swimming. Ga-Matoran are exclusively female (while the other types are composed entirely of males). They are by nature peaceful and friendly, meditating on the virtue of Unity and its principle of Purity. In Metru Nui, about half of the Ga-Matoran were teachers and the other half were students; the best were promoted to work on protodermis purification. On Mata Nui, they are mostly boaters and fisherwomen.
Le-Matoran are in shades of green, and occasionally turquoise blue. These air Matoran have the hightened agility and reflexes needed to avoid high-speed crashes in the transport chutes. They love thrills and dangerous sports, leading them to perhaps take crazy risks; they also enjoy a good practical joke. The main virtues they follow are Unity and Duty, and from them they derive the principle of Faith. Le-Matoran are noted for what is called "treespeak" (on Mata Nui) or "chutespeak" (on Metru Nui), a form of slang that generally combines two words into one (for example, "happyjoy" or "Toa-hero"; see
Bionicle society for a complete list of known terms). Le-Matoran were responsible for nearly all transport in Metru Nui: they flew airships, maintained chutes, and drove land transports; the only transport they wouldn't do was boats, which the Ga-Matoran took care of. Also, Le-Matoran handled Ussal crabs, while on Mata Nui, Onu-Matoran did. On Mata Nui, they are known for their squadron of Gukko birds that they ride into battle.
Po-Matoran are in shades of brown and tan, and also black. Being stone Matoran and working with their hands often, they have great physical strength - however, they can't swim; they sink like rocks instead. They are down-to-earth and practical, not putting too much stock in what they can't see and touch. Po-Matoran focus on the virtues of Unity and Destiny, and its principle of Creation. On both Mata Nui and Metru Nui, Po-Matoran are carvers by trade, making statues and other tools that the Matoran need; it also appears that some Po-Matoran on Mata Nui are shepherds, leading herds of local
Rahi.
Onu-Matoran wear blacks and greys, as well as tan, orange, and purple. As Matoran of the earth they spend a lot of time underground, so their eyes have adapted to see in little light (however, they are easily blinded by bright lights). They tend to put their faith in the past and what can be learned from it. The main Onu-Matoran virtues are Duty and Destiny, and the principle they get from the virtues is Prosperity. In Metru Nui, Onu-Matoran started out as miners before moving their way up to working the Archives. On Mata Nui, mining has become the main job; they also now have the Ussalry—a defense force that rides Ussal crabs as their steeds.
Ko-Matoran wear white, and light shades of blue and grey. Being ice Matoran, they have a natural resistance to the extreme cold of the Knowledge Towers (which comes from a need to keep written documents preserved). Ko-Matoran are quiet to the point of being antisocial, and spend a lot of time being lost in thought, pondering the future in accordance with their main virtue of Destiny and the principle of Peace. In Metru Nui, they spent most of their time watching the stars and considering prophesies, with less experienced Ko-Matoran running errands for the more accomplished scholars; little appears to have changed on Mata Nui.
Physical Characteristics
Though the Matoran from
Metru Nui have physically transformed a few times over their lives, some things have remained constant. First, each Matoran has up to three colors on their bodies: one for their torso, one for their feet and sometimes their hands, and one for their mask; oftentimes their mask color matches their limbs. Second, they invariably wear one of twelve
Kanohi Mask shapes: Great Akaku, Great Hau, Great Kakama, Great Kaukau, Great Miru, Great Pakari, Noble Huna, Noble Komau, Noble Mahiki, Noble Matatu, Noble Rau, and Noble Ruru.
When Matoran first come into being (on Metru Nui, at least), their bodies are characterized by their large, flat, triangular torsos. Their masks also have silver streaks on the forehead that show the masks are powerless. Matoran of this body style are known among some fans as "Metruan".
When
Makuta put the Matoran into
Matoran Spheres, the spheres eventually caused the Matoran to weaken and physically shrink. In this weakened state, the Matoran had very small torsos, large two-toed feet, and gangly oversized arms. This form of Matoran is called "McToran" by some fans, as their toy sets were distributed as prizes in
McDonald's Happy Meals.
After the
Bohrok-Kal were defeated, the
Turaga revealed to the Matoran how they could rebuild their bodies into stronger forms that would be roughly comparable to the bodies they once had on Metru Nui. These forms were not as tall as their Metru Nui forms, but were quite a bit bulkier; and they kept the two-toed feet of their previous incarnation.

Jaller riding a Gukko bird |
Jaller:Jaller was the Captain of the Ta-Koro Guard and the Herald of the Seventh Toa (a title he was actually given by Takua, who was unwilling to accept the fact that
he was the true Herald). He is Takua's best friend and (former)
kolhii partner, and he has a romantic relationship with Hahli Of Ga-Koro. He used to be called "Jala", but was renamed for his deeds in defeating the
Bohrok swarms. In the search for the Toa of Light, Jaller was killed by
Turahk, but was later revived by
Takutanuva. After Takua became
Toa Takanuva, Jaller inherited his
Ussal crab,
Pewku. Recently, Jaller became the
Toa Inika of Fire. Jaller had a red body with yellow hands and feet; he had a red Noble Komau mask on Metru Nui, but it broke and was replaced with
Toa Lhikan's golden Noble Hau, which transformed into a yellow Great Hau-shaped mask.
Kapura:Kapura serves as
Turaga Vakama's messenger. Despite his apparent sluggish movements, Kapura is capable of covering great distances in short periods of time (or as he puts it, "covering great distances by moving very slowly" or simply "being where he isnt."). He was a member of the Chronicler's Company, responsible for defending the Kini-Nui Temple while the
Toa Mata faced Makuta. He is completely red; with a Great Pakari mask on Metru Nui and a Noble Ruru on Mata Nui.
Nuhrii:Vakama's former mentor, maskmaker Nuhrii, was jealous of his former student because Vakama has made finer masks, and was even asked to fill special orders for
Turaga Dume. Nuhrii most often carried a level 3 remove poison
Kanoka Disk, due to the amount of poisonous reptiles in Ta-Metru. He wanted access to the Ta-metru Great Disk to forge it into the ultimate mask of power. He was believed by Makuta to be the destined Toa Metru of Fire. On Metru Nui, Nuhrii was completely red and wore a Noble Ruru mask; he was seen on Mata Nui with a red body, black hands and feet, and a black Great Kaukau mask. In the
Mata Nui Online Game 2, his name was spelled "Nuri".
Takua:Not many Ta-Matoran enjoy to travel, but Takua is an exception. In Metru Nui he ran a small side business trading souvenirs from different metru, but he usually wandered off during his normal job to do so, making the
Vahki learn to keep an eye on him. A thousand years later, Takua gathered the six
Toa Stones on Mata Nui created by the Toa Metru, and summoned the Toa Mata. Once the Toa had arrived on Mata Nui, the Turaga took advantage of Takua's tendency to wander and made him the Chronicler, observing and writing down the Toa's adventures. Shortly afterwards, he began a quest to create a Chronicler's Company to help the Toa. During this quest, he befriended an Ussal crab named Pewku, who became his faithful pet. He led the Chronicler's Company and fended off
Rahi from the Kini-Nui Temple while the Toa battled Makuta. After this, he witnessed the defeat of Makuta and then the awakening of the Bohrok. After the Bohrok and
Bohrok-Kal were defeated, he played on the Ta-Koro kohlii team. Later he found the
Kanohi Avohkii, Mask of Light, and he and his best friend Jaller travelled through Mata Nui in search of "the seventh Toa". It was on this quest that Takua discovered that his destiny was to
become Takanuva, the Toa of Light. Takua originally had a red body and yellow hands and feet; his original mask broke and - not liking the Ta-Matoran colors - he chose a light blue Pakari as a replacement. When the Matoran later rebuilt themselves on Mata Nui, his hands and feet became light blue, like his mask.
Vakama:Before becoming a
Toa Metru, Vakama was the Metru Nui's best maskmaker; so good that "Turaga Dume" (actually Makuta in disguise) personally asked him to make a
Vahi Mask of Time (though he was not able to accomplish this before becoming a Toa). Nuhrii was the one who taught Vakama all about maskmaking. Vakama's colors as a Matoran are unknown, but we know he wore a Noble Huna-shaped mask.
Some other Ta-Matoran named in the
Mata Nui Online Game 2 are
Aft,
Agni,
Aodhan,
Brander,
Kalama,
Keahi,
Maglya,
Tiribomba, and
Vohon. However, these names have not been approved by LEGO's legal department and therefore may not be official.
Ga-Matoran
Hahli:While Hahli was a humble flax-maker by trade, she was surprisingly elected to the Ga-Matoran
kolhii team by
Turaga Nokama instead of Kotu. She later became Takua's replacement as Chronicler, once he became
Toa Takanuva. She is friends of Jaller, and Macku was her kolhii parnter. She later became the
Toa Inika of Water. Hahli had a light blue body, blue hands and feet, and a blue Great Kaukau mask.
Kotu:Kotu is a Ga-Matoran
Rahi tender, and one of Turaga Nokama's advisors. She is one of Ga-Koro's biggest practical jokers. She was expected to be on the Ga-Koro kolhii team, but Turaga Nokama chose Hahli instead based on some divination she had done. Kotu has a light blue body, blue hands and feet, and a blue Noble Rau mask.
Macku:Macku is a good kolhii player (but she was bad at defense, as seen in
Mask of Light), and Hewkii's girlfriend. Macku loves boating; on Mata Nui she patrolled the lake daily, and on Metru Nui she set up a boat race and tours with her teachers' permission. She originally went by "Maku" until her name was changed due to her deeds against the
Bohrok swarms. She also played on the Ga-Koro kohlii team. Macku has a light blue body, blue hands and feet, and a blue Noble Huna mask.
Nokama:Nokama was a teacher on Metru Nui; specifically, she taught translation of ancient texts. Vhisola and Hahli were two of her students.
Toa Lhikan chose her to become the
Toa Metru of Water. Her exact color scheme is unclear, but she wore a blue Noble Rau-shaped mask.
Vhisola:Nokama instilled a fair amount of admiration in one of her students, Vhisola, who became somewhat obsessed with her teacher. A Ga-Metru athlete and talented researcher, Vhisola wanted the Great
Kanoka Disk to become more famous than Nokama. She favored a level 6 freeze Kanoka Disk, allowing her to freeze and cross canals found all over Ga-Metru. She knew of the Matoran Nui and helped convince the other five Matoran who found Great Disks to join with her, and Makuta was tricked into thinking that she was the correct choice for the Toa Metru of Water. She was completely blue and wore a Noble Komau mask.
Some other Ga-Matoran named in the
Mata Nui Online Game 2 are
Amaya,
Kai,
Kailani,
Marka,
Nireta,
Nixie,
Okoth,
Pelagia, and
Shasa. However, these names have not been approved by LEGO's legal department and therefore may not be official.
Le-Matoran
Kongu:On Metru Nui, Kongu was one of the Matoran who ran the chutes, and the
Dark Hunter Nidhiki forced him to reverse the flow of one chute to send three escaping
Toa Metru right to him. Starting out on Mata Nui as a bird wrangler, Kongu eventually became captain of the Gukko Force of Le-Koro, where he rode a
Gukko bird named Ka. At one point, several of the Le-Matoran, including
Turaga Matau, were captured by a
Nui-Rama swarm and taken to their nest, and Kongu, Tamaru, Takua, and a few others went to help. Also, when the entire village of Le-Koro, including Matau and
Toa Lewa, were corrupted by
Krana, Kongu and Tamaru escaped and teamed with several others to help free Le-Koro. He and Tamaru were on the Le-Koro
kolhii team. Kongu later became the
Toa Inika of Air. Kongu has a lime green body and teal hands and feet; he had a teal Great Miru mask on Mata Nui but was shown in
Legends of Metru Nui wearing a Noble Ruru.
Matau:Matau was a risk-taking transport driver on Metru Nui before becoming a
Toa Metru. He often spent his spare time test-driving prototype vehicles on Le-Metru's Test Track. He and Orkahm didn't think much of one another, due to their wildly different personalities. His exact colors are unknown, but he wore a green Noble Mahiki-shaped mask.
Orkahm:Matau's chief rival in Metru Nui was a Matoran named Orkahm. Where Matau was cocky and reckless, Orkahm was responsible and careful. He was an Ussal rider like Matau was, but tended to possess more control. His favorite
Ussal crab was
Pewku (who later became a pet to Onepu, and then Takua). His favored
Kanoka Disk was a level 4 regenerator, which he used to fix chutes. Makuta thought him to be the destined Toa Metru of Air. Orkahm was completely green and wore a Noble Matatu mask. In the
Mata Nui Online Game 2, his name was spelled "Orkan".
Tamaru:Tamaru is a Le-Matoran who wishes to fly a Gukko despite his fear of heights; on Metru Nui this fear kept him on the ground as a used vehicle salesman. When most of the village of Le-Koro was kidnapped by Nui-Rama, Tamaru was not, along with a few others. He was later part of the Chronicler's Company, helping Takua to fend off
Rahi from the Kini-Nui Temple while the
Toa Mata fought Makuta. He was also one of the two Le-Matoran who escaped being possessed by
Krana, and also served on the Le-koro kohlii team. He has a green body, lime green hands and feet, and a lime green Noble Rau mask.
Some other Le-Matoran named in the
Mata Nui Online Game 2 are
Boreas,
Kumo,
Makani,
Sanso,
Shu,
Taiki,
Tuuli, and
Vira. However, these names have not been approved by LEGO's legal department and therefore may not be official.
Po-Matoran
Ahkmou:In Metru Nui, Onewa's rival was a Po-Matoran named Ahkmou. Shifty and devious, Ahkmou is the Matoran
Nidhiki chose to help gather the Great
Kanoka Disks. Ahkmou is a carver, and thinks himself to be more important than anyone else. He carries a level 3 regeneration Kanoka Disk to repair mistakes made while carving. He always sides with whomever he thinks will get him ahead. Unlike the rest of the Matoran, Ahkmou remembers Metru Nui, as he was awakened by Makuta and not the
Turaga, and Makuta filled him in. He would continue to aid Makuta by selling infected
koli balls, causing Po-Matoran to get sick until Takua and
Toa Pohatu discovered the plot. He has possibly reformed since then; by the time the
Rahkshi attack he is the shopkeeper of Po-Koro. Makuta believed him to be the destined Toa Metru of Stone. He was originally completely brown, and wore a Noble Rau mask; by the time the Rahkshi attacked, his body had become tan and he switched masks for a black Rau.
Hafu:It is rumored that Hafu has incredible skill with disks, because they return if thrown correctly. Hafu is Hewkii's
kolhii partner. He is also an incredibly talented - and boastful - carver, and is responsible for the statues on the Path of Prophecies. However, he once sacrificed all of his statues to prevent
Bohrok from invading and destroying Po-Koro. Hafu has a tan body, black hands and feet, and a black Noble Ruru mask; though on Metru Nui he is seen with a brown Noble Rau mask.
Hewkii:Hewkii is a champion at the sport of kolhii, and served on the Po-Koro kohlii team. In Metru Nui, he was one of the city's best Kanoka Disk makers. He used to be called "Huki" until he was renamed by the Turaga for his deeds against the Bohrok. He shares a romantic relationship with Macku of Ga-Koro. He later became the
Toa Inika of Stone. On Mata Nui, he had a tan body, orange-brown hands and feet, and wore an orange-brown Great Kakama mask; his Metru Nui colors are unknown.
Kodan:Kodan was the Metru Nui Chronicler, and the Matoran who is credited with inventing the sport of Akilini. He began his job as Chronicler when
Lhikan and ten other
Toa arrived to fight the
Kanohi Dragon, and continued for centuries until "
Turaga Dume" (Makuta in disguise) sent him with two Toa on a mission from which they never returned. The ball that can be made from
Pohatu Nuva's Climbing Claws is called by
Turaga Onewa a "Kodan Ball" because of its resemblance to the balls used in the earliest forms of Akilini. Kodan's colors and mask are unknown.
Onewa:Onewa was a carver, and a rival to Ahkmou. He was chosen by Toa Lhikan to be a
Toa Metru. His exact color scheme is unknown, but he wore a brown Noble Komau-shaped mask.
Some other Po-Matoran named in the
Mata Nui Online Game 2 are
Ally,
Bour,
Epena,
Gadjati,
Golyo,
Kamen,
Kivi,
Pekka, and
Piatra. However, these names have not been approved by LEGO's legal department and therefore may not be official.
Onu-Matoran
Mavrah:Mavrah was an Onu-Matoran archivist and a friend of Whenua's. He came up with the theory that although
Bohrok were mechanical, perhaps they had evolved from being biomechanical to being completely dependent on their
Krana. Mavrah, Whenua and Onepu were studying discovered sea
Rahi in the Metru Nui Archives. After it became obvious the Rahi could no longer be held in the Archives,
Turaga Dume ordered the Rahi gone. However, Mavrah escaped with the Rahi from Metru Nui. He presumably died when he was swept away by a wave created by a sea Rahi. Mavrah is said to have worn a purple Great Pakari mask, though his other colors are unknown.
Nuparu:Nuparu was an Onu-Matoran inventor who created the
Boxor defense vehicle. On Metru Nui he designed the
Kralhi and
Vahki enforcer robots, though the Kralhi's spectacular failure earned it the nickname "Nuparu's Folly". The Boxor was made from an inactive Gahlok during the Bohrok siege of Onu-Koro. Nuparu discovered that the Bohrok were non-living, and with aid from Onepu and Taipu, he modified the Gahlok shell into a combat vehicle for use against the Bohrok. It was used successfully in the liberations of Onu-Koro and Le-Koro, but was defeated by Pahrak in Ga-Koro. Nuparu later became the
Toa Inika of Earth. He was always shown as having a black body, grey hands and feet, and an orange Great Pakari mask.
Onepu:Onepu is Captain of the Onu-Wahi Ussalry. He worked as an archivist on Metru Nui, and participated in the project with the giant Rahi alongside Whenua and Mavrah. He and Taipu are on the Onu-Koro
kolhii team. He used to be the owner of an Ussal Crab named Pewku, who was later Takua's faithful pet. He has a black body, purple hands and feet, and a purple Great Pakari mask.
Taipu:Taipu is a miner, and among the strongest Onu-Matoran. Due to his desire to see Le-Wahi, he was captured by the
Nui-Rama (and the only one outside of the Le-Matoran to have been kidnapped). He was part of the Chronicler's Company who helped to defend Kini-Nui Temple when the
Toa Mata fought Makuta, and also was on the Onu-Koro kohlii team. He has a tan body, black hands and feet, and a black Great Pakari mask.
Tehutti:One of Whenua's rivals in Metru Nui was Tehutti, an archivist who always wanted a new exhibit to mark his name on. Tehutti's hard head often caused him to forget the most important purposes. He generally used a level 5 teleportation
Kanoka Disk to move around the complex Archives. Tehutti had no definite purpose for the Great Kanoka Disk that he found, except maybe to put it on exhibit and achieve recognition for his work. Makuta believed his destiny to be as the Toa Metru of Earth. On Metru Nui, Tehutti was all black and wore a Noble Huna mask; and on Mata Nui he had a Great Kakama mask instead. In the
Mata Nui Online Game 2, his name was spelled "Tehuti".
Whenua:Before becoming a
Toa Metru, Whenua was an archivist on Metru Nui. He was one of the three Matoran to work on the sea Rahi project, along with Mavrah and Onepu. His colors are unclear, but he wore a black Noble Ruru-shaped mask.
Some other Onu-Matoran named in the
Mata Nui Online Game 2 are
Aiyetoro,
Akamu,
Azibo,
Damek,
Dosne,
Kaj,
Mamoru, and
Zemya. However, these names have not been approved by LEGO's legal department and therefore may not be official.
Ko-Matoran
Ehrye:Nuju was often hard on Ehrye, an overeager Matoran who hoped to be a scholar and gain a place in Metru Nui's Knowledge Towers by presenting the Head Scholar with a Great
Kanoka Disk. Ehrye was seen by Nuju as being too enthusiastic and excitable to be a successful scholar. Ehrye most often carried a level 3 regeneration Kanoka Disk to fix cracks in the towers. Makuta believed him to be the true destined Toa Metru of Ice. On Metru Nui, Ehrye was completely white and wore a Noble Mahiki mask; his colors and mask on Mata Nui have not yet been seen.
Ihu:Ihu was a Ko-Metru seer who was Nuju's mentor. He died in a Chute accident. Mt. Ihu on Mata Nui was named after him, as a reminder of his wisdom to Nuju. His mask and colors are unknown.
Kopeke:Kopeke is a carver from Ko-koro, and is more aloof than most Ko-Matoran. He is a champion of Huai Snowball Sling, and also a member of the Ko-Koro
kolhii team. Kopeke was also a member of the Chronicler's Company, which helped the
Toa Mata by fending off dangerous
Rahi. While his Metru Nui colors are unknown, on Mata Nui he originally had a white body, light blue feet, and a light blue Noble Komau mask. When this mask was damaged in kolhii practice, he replaced it with a dark grey Noble Matatu in honor of Turaga Nuju; and when he was rebuilt his hands and feet also became dark grey.
Matoro:Matoro was a Ko-Matoran who translated for
Turaga Nuju. He learned of Metru Nui through his translation work. He ran a pet shop in Metru Nui. He is on the Ko-Koro kolhii team. He later became the
Toa Inika of Ice. While we don't know his colors on Metru Nui for sure, on Mata Nui he had a white body, sand-blue hands and feet, and a sand-blue Great Akaku-shaped mask.
Nuju:Before becoming a
Toa Metru, Nuju was an accomplished seer in Metru Nui. Ihu was a mentor to him. Nuju felt that Ehrye was too energetic to make a good scholar. Nuju appeared to be completely white, and wore a Noble Matatu-shaped mask with a telescoping eyepiece.
Some other Ko-Matoran named in the
Mata Nui Online Game 2 are
Arktinen,
Jaa,
Jaatikko,
Kantai,
Kokkan,
Kylma,
Lumi,
Pakastaa,
Talvi, and
Toudu. However, these names have not been approved by LEGO's legal department and therefore may not be official.
History
A thousand years ago during the
Great Cataclysm, the region around Mount Valmai "rocketed up" off of a continent and became an isolated island,
Voya Nui, stranding the Matoran and other beings living there. Since then the Matoran have had to struggle to survive, dealing with constant drought and volcanic eruptions. All the Matoran have banded together and live in a single fortified settlement.
It has been implied that at some point before the Cataclysm, the Matoran were sent to
Karzahni for repairs. However, Karzahni's workmanship wasn't the best, and he gave them weapons for defense to make up for it. He then sent them to Mount Valmai rather than where they originally came from, rather than admit to his bad handiwork.
The Matoran of Voya Nui have never seen a
Toa, and their leader,
Turaga Jovan, died in the Cataclysm. Since they have no protectors, some of them have become great warriors. But since they have never seen a Toa, they accepted the claims of six beings who said they were Toa come to save them. Unfortunately, they were not Toa but
Piraka - "thieves and murderers" who soon dropped their act and enslaved most of the Matoran.
A few Matoran were able to escape enslavement, and have begun to fight back. They allied themselves with the
Toa Nuva once they accepted that they really were Toa and not pretenders; and will soon give aid to the
Toa Inika.
Physical Characteristics
Due to Karzahni's shoddy repair jobs, the Matoran on Voya Nui are physically weaker than most Matoran, and there is no uniform body style. There is also no uniform set of masks that the Matoran wear, as Karzahni just gave them whatever masks he had lying around.
List of Matoran
Balta: Balta is a Ta-Matoran inventor who can easily turn discarded equipment into useful devices and weapons. He is Garan's second-in-command and a close friend to Dalu. He carries twin repellers that can block any attack when crossed.
Dalu: Dalu is a Ga-Matoran warrior and the group's resident muscle; always ready to jump into a fight. Her twin chargers can briefly increase one of an ally's attributes (such as speed, strength, etc.), though this charging tires Dalu out; she can also use her chargers offensively, heightening an enemy's senses until they become unbearable - she even once drove
Toa Gali to madness by enhancing her sight until she could see all of existence at the molecular level.
Piruk: The Le-Matoran, Piruk, acts as the group's spy, sneaking in and out of enemy bases. He carries two sets of shredder claws, which he often sharpens against each other out of nervous habit.
Velika: Velika is, like most Po-Matoran, a carver; and a very good one at that, crafting most of the resistance's equipment with Balta including
Zamor Launchers for the Toa Inika. He is rather wise, but he tends to speak in riddles. He uses twin power carvers to quickly craft new equipment.
Garan: Garan is an Onu-Matoran, and is the unofficial leader of the resistance. He is usually the first to understand the meaning of Velika's riddles. His pulse bolt generators fire balls of energy that become more powerful the further they travel.
Kazi: Kazi is a Ko-Matoran who tends to be very sarcastic, and is the resistance member that has the least patience with Velika's cryptic sayings. He knew about
Axonn's existence long before anyone else did, but kept it a secret at Axonn's request. His weapons are twin echo forks that can be slammed together to create a destructive sound wave.
In addition,
Dezalk is a Ta-Matoran who served as the Piraka's test subject for their Zamor Spheres. He gathered the Voya Nui Matoran together at Zaktan's command, where the Piraka proceeded to enslave the rest of the population (except for the resistance members, who were elsewhere).
Like
Toa and other Bionicle creatures, Matoran have the ability to combine into a single being, with a six-member combination called a
Matoran Nui. This has been known to happen twice:
* Nuhrii, Vhisola, Orkahm, Ahkmou, Tehutii, and Ehrye formed a Matoran Nui to fight off the
Morbuzakh, allowing the
Toa Metru to reach its King Root.
* Jaller, Macku, Kongu, Hewkii, Onepu, and Matoro also made a Matoran Nui once on
Mata Nui to fight a
Nui-Jaga scorpion.
Matoran possibly former
Matoran Kaita, but its never former. In McDonalds promotional Matoran, the back of Matoran packs have Matoran Nui and two "mini" Toa Kaita, but former to same Matoran elements bodies and masks.
*A number of other beings started out as Matoran, including nearly all
Toa and
Turaga (though there is doubt that the
Toa Mata were ever Matoran), and the
Dark Hunters Firedracax, Gatherer,
Nidhiki, Prototype, Savage, Spinner, and Subterranean.
