Minton's Playhouse
Minton's Playhouse was a bar and club, established by the tenor saxophonist Henry Minton on West 118th Street in
New York City in
1938. The responsibility of running the club passed to former bandleader
Teddy Hill in 1940.
Many
jazz musicians, such as
Dizzy Gillespie,
Charlie Parker,
Thelonious Monk, and
Max Roach associated in after-hours
jam sessions at Minton's, and these sessions are often cited as important in the development of
bebop, then dubbed "modern jazz".
Jerry Newman, then a student at
Columbia recorded some of these and they were issued by
Onyx in the 1970s and on CD by
Highnote more recently.
The house was shuttered since the early 70's, will re-open on Friday May 19th, 2006, according to the Housing & Services, Inc.'s press release on May 12th, 2006.
