Nashik
Nashik or
Nasik (नाशिक in marathi)is a city in
India's
Maharashtra state. Nashik is in the northwest of Maharashtra, 185 km from
Mumbai (Bombay) and 220 km from
Pune. Nashik is the administrative headquarters of
Nashik District and
Nashik Division. The "Wine capital of India" and popularly known as the "Grape City" is located in the Western Ghats on the banks of
Godavari River, has become a center of attraction because of its beautiful surroundings and cool and pleasant climate. Nashik has a personality of its own due to its mythological, historical, social and cultural importance. The city, vibrant and active on the industrial, political, social and cultural fronts, has influenced the lives of many a great personalities. The
Godavari River flows through the city from its source lies to the west-southwest of the city, in the holy place of
Trimbakeshwar. Nashik is surrounded with beautifull mountains, which attract many adventure lovers as well as bird wachers.
Historically the city has been a religious center - it is one of the four cities in
India that hosts the massive
Sinhastha Kumbh Mela once in twelve years. Temples and
ghats (steps) on the banks of Godavari have made Nashik one of the holiest places for
Hindus all over the world.
The third most industrialised city of Maharashtra after Mumbai & Pune is famous for its grapes, and ongoing efforts are underway to promote the growth of an export-oriented wine industry in the district.
It is believed that, Nashik got its name during the
Ramayana period. Shurpanakha, the sister of the demon
Ravana had proposed to marry
Rama.Hearing this Rama ordered Laxmana to cut off shurpanakha's nose (Nasika).Thus 'Nasik' got its name. Nashik is famous for the ghats around
Panchavati, the area of 5 banyan trees.
Sita was abducted by
Ravana from this place.
Recent industrial growth has brought about modernization and development. The city is home to an important thermal power plant (Eklahare) and a National Treasury Printing Press (India Security Press in
Nashik Road). There are five 'Industrial Zones' in the Nashik area and outskirts (Satpur, Ambad, Sinnar, Igatpuri and Dindori).

By Air : Mumbai airport is the nearest international airport from Nashik. You can cheaply fly into Nashik on Air Deccan, which operates daily flights to Mumbai and Nagpur. Nashik has a small, air-force operated airport sometimes used for non-military purposes, while the Hindutan Aeronautics Limited airport is at Ozar, 21 km from Nashik.
By train :Nashik Road station is nearest station approximately 8 km from main city, and is on Mumbai-Kalyan-Itagpuri-Manmad rail-route.
By road :From Mumbai: Nashik is 180 Km to the North-East of [[Mumbai{{and is connected via road (National Highway 3: Mumbai-Agra Highway) and rail ({{Nashik Road}} station on the Mumbai-Bhusawal Central Railway). Visitors to Nashik can avail of multiple public and privately operated buses (leaving from Dadar station in Mumbai) or private taxicabs to travel to and from Nashik and Mumbai.
From Pune:Nashik is 215 km to the North of Pune, and is connected by road (National Highway 50 to {{Gujrat}}) that passes through the {{Nashik Road}} railway station area (which also has the first and only road flyover of Nashik city). Buses and taxicabs ply regularly between Nashik and Pune.
