Nyanza Province

Location of Nyanza Province in Kenya

Nyanza is a province of Kenya around Lake Victoria inhabited predominantly by the Luo. There are also bantu speaking tribes such as the Gusii, the Kuria and a few traces of the Luhya living in the province. The province derives its name from the Sukuma a bantu speaking tribe living on the Tanzanian shore of Lake Victoria to whom 'Nyanza' refers to a large mass of water.

The provincial capital is Kisumu. The province has a population of 4,392,196 (as of 1999) within an area of 16,162 km². [1]The climate is tropical humid.

Districts

Initially Nyanza had four administrative districts. Since the 1990's the province has been further divided into the following districts:
*Bondo District -- capital Bondo
*Gucha District -- capital Ogembo -also known as South Kisii District and Ogembo District
*Homa Bay District -- capital Homa Bay
*Kisii District -- capital Kisii -also known as Kisii Central District
*Kisumu District -- capital Kisumu
*Kuria District -- capital Kehancha
*Migori District -- capital Migori
*Nyamira District -- capital Nyamira -also known as North Kisii District
*Nyando District -- capital Awasi
*Rachuonyo District -- capital Oyugis
*Siaya District -- capital Siaya
*Suba District -- capital Mbita
