census of 2000, there were 3,396 people, 1,405 households, and 896 families residing in the city. The
population density was 639.6/km² (1,654.8/mi²). There were 1,668 housing units at an average density of 314.2/km² (812.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 89.78%

married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 22.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.3 males.

Olney is the home of the
One Arm Dove Hunt, held annually each year since 1972 for amputees. It is known as Texas' Most Unusual Event.
