Oulu Province

The Province of Oulu is a province of Finland. It borders the provinces of Lapland, Western Finland and Eastern Finland. It also borders the Gulf of Bothnia and Russia.

The province of Oulu was first introduced in 1775. After the Treaty of Fredrikshamn parts of Lapland were annexed to the province, and in 1922 Petsamo was annexed to the province. Finally, in 1936 Lapland was separated into its own province.

Administration

The State Provincial Office is a joint regional authority of seven different ministries. It promotes national and regional objectives of the State central administration.

The province of Oulu is divided into 2 regions:
*Northern Ostrobothnia (Pohjois-Pohjanmaa/ Norra Österbotten)
*Kainuu (Kainuu/ Kajanaland).

The regions in Oulu Province are divided on 51 municipalities, including the city of Oulu.

Other info

Oulu's icehockey team Oulun Kärpät have won Finnish Icehockey League Championships three times (1981, 2004 and 2005). They have also won silver of European champion two times, 2004 and 2005.
