Rene Belloq

Rene Belloq is a fictional character from the film Raiders of the Lost Ark. He is played by Paul Freeman.

Rene Belloq is a French archaeologist and Indiana Jones's enemy. After Jones steals a golden idol from a South American temple, Belloq and a group of natives ambushed Jones outside the temple, where he managed to steal the Idol from Jones, before Jones escaped capture narrowly. Belloq later reappears in Cairo, searching for the Ark of the Covenant. and caused a bar brawl over the alleged death of Marion Ravenwood. It was later revealed that Belloq was working for the Nazis under Colonel Dietrich and Toht, and has kidnapped Ravenwood. Jones and Ravenwood managed to sabotage their plans to transport the Ark to Germany, and carried the Ark to freighter ship to England. Belloq and Dietrich boarded a submarine to stop the ship, and took Ravenwood and the Ark to an unknown island, unaware that Jones was following them. Belloq managed to capture Jones and allowed him to witness the opening of the Ark. After opening it, Belloq is at first delighted from seeing the spirits but his jubilation turns to shock as he absorbs the power of God and redirects it into the soldiers in front of him. After Dietrich and Toht die in their gruesome fashions, Belloq blows up from the heavily-concentrated power in him.

Before Raiders of the Lost Ark, Belloq made an appearance in an earlier adventure and supplied information for Jones about what he will be up against. He's still his arrogant self, though.
