Rurik Dynasty

The Rurik Dynasty was the ruling dynasty of what is now Russia from 862 to 1598. It should be noted that Russia per se did not exist during that time; rather, the state (and then group of principalities) that existed from 862 until 1240 (see Mongol invasion of Russia) is called the Kievan Rus'. After the 1480s, the dynasty ruled over a state called Muscovy and held court at Moscow.

Among the descendents of the Rurik dynasty are noble families of Russia (Dolgorukov, Repnin, Gorchakov, Gagarin), as well as those of the Commonwealth of Poland-Lithuania (Ostrogski, Wareg-Massalski, Czetwertinski and others).

The dynasty was established by Rurik, a Varangian ruler of Novgorod, and became extinct with the death in 1598 of the "Imbecile" tsar Feodor I. After Feodor's death, an unstable period known as the Time of Troubles ensued, lasting until 1613. In that year, Mikhail I ascended to the throne, founding the Romanov dynasty that would last until 1917.
