Siaogang
Siaogang () is a district in southern
Kaohsiung City,
Republic of China.
Siaogang was developed during the Dutch's domination. They built Hong-Mao harbor to make balance to
An-Ping Harbor in
Tainan. After the war between the Dutches and Lord
Zheng Chenggong, the Dutches lost and left Taiwan. Lord Zheng Chenggong decided to take Taiwan as the base to revive
Ming Dynasty and prepare his troops for fighting
Qing Dynasty. He sent one of his men, Wu Yanshang, to expand Siaogang. As soon as Zheng, his son, and his grandson died, Qing Dynasty soon took charge of Taiwan. In 1895, Qing Dynasty gave Taiwan to Japan as a colony, and Siaogang was used to produce suger for Japanese.
Siaogang is located in the southern part of Kaohsiung. North binds
Cianjhen District; East attachs to
Daliao Township; South links
Linyuan Township; West leans along the coast line.
As far as Industry of
Taiwan is concerned, Siaogang is also one of the most importantdistrict where Taiwan produce steels and ships. Under the threatening of
Great Depression during 1970s, the government spent 5 years to carry out
The Ten Key Infrastructure Projects. Two factories of the projects lie in here:
China Steel Corp. and
China Ship Building Corp. With the help of Kaohsiung Harbor, the products of these two companies can be transfer to the whole globe and to whoever has bought the products. These products are also made for Taiwan's national construction so that it's not only sold to foregine country for benefits but also benefits Taiwan.
The only tourist attraction in Siaogang has is the "Kao" Tower. The name comes from its shape: it is build in the shape of Chinese character "高"(pronuced "Kao"). It was once a lighthouse. After the building of second harbor of Kaohsiung, It is renewed and became a tourist attraction. The shape of the building is not only a Chinese character but also represent the spirit of Kaohsiung.
