Stadsfries language

Stadsfries is a language spoken in some of the Frisian towns in The Netherlands.

At the start of the 20th century, in those towns it was the predominant language, and was the mother tongue to more than 90% of the population. By the end of the century, however, its use had dropped, being spoken by about a quarter of the population.

Most Stadsfries studies have focused on determining either a Franconian (Hollandic) or a Frisian origin. The latest study has shown Stadsfries shares characteristics with the dialects of South Holland.
