Survival kit

Survival kit is a package of tools and supplies prepared in advance as an aid to survival. Military aircraft and some spacecraft are typically equipped with a survival kit, and the crew is trained in survival techniques.

Useful survival kits are easily portable and include only the minimum elements needed to stay alive, with no extraneous luxury additions to provide for comfort. The kit almost always includes materials for shelter against the elements, water potage and purification, implements for creating fire, light, and emergency signals, a knife and sharpening implement, navigation equipment, first aid supplies, and food.

Typical survival kits include:
* Space blanket
* Plastic bags or trash bags
* Sturdy cord
* Iodine tablets
* Waterproof Matches
* Candles/Torch
* Magnifying glass
* Whistle
* Mirror
* Swiss army knife
* Sharpening stone
* Compass
* Bandages
* Insect repellent
* Canned food
* Map

Beside large survival kits, also exist so-called "mini survival kits" or "Altoids tin" survival kits.

A bug-out bag is a type of survival kit which is put together for the purpose of having enough supplies to escape from ones normal place of residence or work (for example, in a city) to a planned retreat location in the event of a major emergency.

Pre-packaged survival kits can include instructions in survival techniques, including first aid methods.

Note: almost no modern survival kits have canned food, also the multi-tool has replaced the Swiss army knife as the tool of choice.
