Tanfield, Durham

Tanfield is a village in County Durham, England. It is generally counted as part of the town of Stanley and is the location of Tanfield Railway. Tanfield is in fact two separate villages: Tanfield Lea located at the bottom of a valley is the modern part of the village with no buildings older than one hundred years old. Tanfield Village is a much older place, located on the opposite hill of the valley to Stanley.

Tanfield Moor Colliery, TantobieOpened before 1828. Closed Oct 1948. Owners:- Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Collieries Ltd. Location:- (Sheet 88) NZ169545, 54° 53' 6" N, 1° 44' 12" W, 7.5 miles [12 Km] SW of Newcastle.
